Florida's First Family Day

We celebrated Florida's first ever Family Day this past month and it was a resounding success. With help from so many incredible community sponsors, the inaugural event that took place at Railroad Square Art District had plenty of family friendly activities where we could come together and support our local small businesses. Thank you to everyone that had a part in putting this event together and we look forward to it becoming an annual event!

November 9th Meeting Recap

At the November 9th Commission meeting, some topics I raised included:

📌 Ensuring the school district is included in our efforts to combat poverty in 32304.
📌 Investigating options for further safety improvements on Miccosukee Road and our canopy roads.
📌 Supporting the preservation efforts of the Lake Hall School House including a letter of support for their grant application.

Following each County and Blueprint meeting we post a Meeting Recap on all our social media accounts, so be sure to follow those below!

Leon County hosts NCAA Cross Country National Championship

Leon County was proud to host the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country National Championship this past month at Apalachee Regional Park. ESPN was on site and this event was shown live nationwide on ESPNU. It was a great look at what our incredible tourism staff are able to put together as they work through the bidding process to host the World Championships in a few years. Keep an eye out as we share more details about events happening at ARP!
Ongoing Projects
Here's the current status for ongoing County and Blueprint projects

Bannerman Widening Project

The Bannerman Road widening project is underway and is currently in the finalization of its design phase. This design will be coming to the Blueprint Board for approval, which will then begin the process for engineering, right-of-way acquisition and permitting. The project is split up into 3 segments, each with differing improvements planned:

  • Segment 1: North Meridian Road to Preservation Road (Construct a median and turn lanes to support two-lane roadway with multimodal and stormwater improvements.)
  • Segment 2: Preservation Road to Tekesta Drive (Widen to four-lanes with multimodal and stormwater improvements.)
  • Segment 3: Tekesta Drive to Thomasville Road (Widen to four-lanes with multimodal and stormwater improvements.)
A multimodal path is currently proposed on both sides of the widened road from Bull Headley to Thomasville, and on the southern side of Bannerman from Bull Headley to Meridian Road. We will keep you updated on any traffic impacts as this project moves forward.

Northeast Gateway

The Northeast Gateway project is continuing into the design phase following the acceptance of the PD&E of the Blueprint Board, and the clearing for the road has begun. This project includes the expansion of Welaunee Boulevard and will provide relief to Miccosukee and Centerville Roads, a second exit to the Leon County Schools complex which includes Montford Middle School and Roberts Elementary School, as well as a future entrance for the desperately needed Northeast Park. Public input will be requested during this phase to ensure we get the best product for everyone involved and impacted. Stay tuned to our social media for when those opportunities will be.

Market District Placemaking

The Market District Park aspect of the Market District Placemaking project is currently in the final design and permitting phase after going through rigorous public input. Above is the concept plan for the park passed in a previous Blueprint meeting which includes pickleball courts, a large open greenspace, walking trails, waterplay area, and shaded plaza area. Following the finalization of the design, contract bidding will begin prior to the groundbreaking and construction of the park. Completion of this project is expected by mid to late 2023.
