The Short Straw: Bio-Based Construction

This article highlights some of the many beautiful straw buildings constructed in France over the past decade, with some background on how advocacy organizations are helping the movement along. We love to see new multi-story straw buildings and can't wait to see more of these all over!
Locally Sourced: Using Site Subsoil as a Construction Material
This piece describes the use of earth blocks (made from the soils on site) for the basement walls of a new midrise in a London redevelopment. The project's architects want to use these blocks instead of comparable concrete blocks to reduce the embodied carbon of a large building and get high BREEAM (British sustainability standards) scores.
Hyper-Connected Architecture in Iran
This video gives an overview of low-tech, climate-adapted Iranian vernacular building design and a newer project that uses these techniques. The Majara Residence, built in 2020 on Hormuz Island, is a collection of colorful Superadobe (Nader Khalili's sandbag dome system) structures that use traditional arid dryland design tricks to stay comfortable.
WORKSHOP- Community Rebuilds Essentials: How We Build Sustainable Affordable Homes
Have you ever wondered just how Community Rebuilds, that funk natural building school/affordable home  provider in Utah, does it? This upcoming in-person workshop "will squeeze that knowledge into an action-packed five-day overview, complete with lectures, guest speakers, tours, and hands-on experiential learning opportunities." You can stay at their lovely straw bale bunkhouse or just nearby on your own. The sessions start on July 24, so register soon!
Check out the latest issue of The Last Straw Journal, No. 72!
Our Spring issue is here!  In this issue you will build a cob community, eat wild blackberries, get bit by the straw bale bug, rekindle a movement, and much more!
We hope The Last Straw can be a platform to share and explore ideas of a better world through the lens of building methods and materials. Join us as we bring a critical perspective to conventional practice, imagine alternatives, and connect designers, builders, and dreamers. Let us know what you think and if you're working on something you think we should share!
