The BEAM Embodied Carbon Calculator for Buildings is Now Available!

The eagerly anticipated tool from Builders for Climate Action is finally ready and available for free on their website! This is a huge step for comparing the carbon emissions from producing natural materials to conventional materials. BEAM is a great tool for building material selection and some ammunition to argue for a low-carbon future.
Straw Bale Construction: Then, Now, Whenever ... video
In this video, Matts Myrhman, David Eisenberg, and Joe Silins start from the beginning of the straw bale revival and carry us to the present and future of natural building. We love hearing stories from the early days of the revival and the revivalists thoughts on the future of building. This video is a great thought-provoking overview.

NOCMAT 2022 Conference Starts in June, Register Now

The International Conference on Non-conventional Materials and Technologies starts next month, and it's all virtual. This dense conference of the latest in alternative building will happen online over the course of a few days spread out between June 7-23. Registration is open and the program is up!
Straw Bale Music Video
Looking for new music to listen to? Look no further than this ad from ISO Stroh, a company that makes blown-in straw insulation. A surprising pairing for sure, but we'd love to see more straw bale stage sets.
We hope The Last Straw can be a platform to share and explore ideas of a better world through the lens of building methods and materials. Join us as we bring a critical perspective to conventional practice, imagine alternatives, and connect designers, builders, and dreamers. Let us know what you think and if you're working on something you think we should share!
