Message from the PTA Board
The days since schools closed on March 13th have been at best unusual. But in the last two weeks, they’ve been heartbreaking. Children are likely confused, angry and sad after seeing cases of racial injustice and senseless violence. Having been taught their entire lives by parents and teachers to be kind to one another regardless of race or background, it is difficult to make sense of and to discuss such unspeakable violence.
We all want a safe place where our children and families can live and learn and love without fear or anguish. As leaders and parents, we can work toward that goal by being open with our children about racial injustice and the importance of an equitable world. To assist parents and caregivers with these conversations, FCPS has provided several helpful suggestions and reading recommendations
from the National Association of School Psychologists.
As we enter this last week of the school year, we want to stress that:
1. We are committed to racial equity and making sure that all members of the VES community feel valued and included.
2. We’re thinking of you all and hope you are healthy and safe.
3. We *really* miss you and your families and hope to see you soon.
4. We are here to help you and your children and will do our best to assist you in any way we can. Just send us an email at email@example.com
Wishing you a safe and happy summer.

School Supply Sale for 2020-21 Now Open
Even though we will be ending this school year virtually, we must continue to plan for the 2020-2021 school year. Therefore, the PTA’s School Supply Program is back and the sale is now open through June 30th. The kits will only be available for purchase online. Our grade-level teams have carefully created these supply lists and the kits will contain supplies including hand sanitizers and Lysol wipes.
It is uncertain what the "Back to School" season will look like with current supply situations and shipping delays at many major retailers. Be confident that these school supply kits will have all of the supplies your child needs to be prepared for class!
Go to www.educationalproducts.com/shoppacks and enter the school ID, VIE008 (3 letters/3 numbers). Select your child's grade for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year and follow the directions to complete your order. Keep your online confirmation as your receipt.
School Supply Kits will be delivered to the school. Arrangements will be made to distribute kits to families should there be an extended distance learning schedule. If you have questions, please contact Alison McKee at 703-304-8852.
Immediate Volunteers Needed for the 2020-21 School Year
Several volunteer positions for the 2020-21 school year will be opening up over the next few weeks but we’re hoping to fill the following spots soon. The PTA Board and outgoing Committee Chairs will provide much guidance and help throughout the transition. If you have questions or are interested, please email Stefanie Petrucelli and Heather Kenney. We’d love to have your help!
Social Media Chair: We’re looking for one or two volunteers to manage the PTA’s social media accounts and post information about school and PTA-related events on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for the 2020-21 school year, starting in June. PTA officers and other committee chairs will help provide content and then you do the fun and easy part from home. You create one post and to save you time, an automated program posts to all three accounts. It’s that simple!
Dining for Dollars: The Dining for Dollars Chair is looking for a volunteer to work closely with her to organize and confirm events with local businesses, create and make copies of flyers to send home with students, post on social media and communicate with establishments after events.
Thank You, Volunteers!
Thank you to the following Rockstar Volunteers for dedicating your time, energy, and creativity to the VES community. We truly appreciate you!
First, thank you to Special Education Chair Kristen Rhoads. She and Lauren Leonard coordinated with the school on activities for Inclusive Schools Week that focused on inclusion and celebrating uniqueness and diversity. They also arranged for author and former VES student David Egan to speak to students during a school-wide assembly on inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. Kristin and Lauren, your feedback, knowledge, and support is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Kudos to the McKees: Thank you to Family Bingo Chair Tom McKee for once again organizing and running a successful bingo night. Because of your planning, this fun and family-friendly event is a BIG hit each year. And to School Supplies Chair Alison McKee, thank you for making the back-to-school craziness for VES families a little bit easier by coordinating the school supply drive from beginning to end. We appreciate both of you volunteering your time to support our VES community!
Shannon Cilman and Erin Prentice, our Read-A-Thon chairs, have put together this well-loved month-long reading competition for the last three years. Every year the Read-A-Thon is a popular event, motivating students of all ages to read. We appreciate your creativity in organizing this successful event each year and the many hours you dedicate to tallying bookmarks and the time students spend reading. Thank you Shannon and Erin!
Trish Alexander and Jessica Readyhough, our Faculty Basketball Game Chairs, both agreed early in the year to once again organize this great community-building event. Sadly due to the unexpected circumstances and school closures, the game could not be held this year. We look forward to next year’s FBG. Thank you, Trish and Jess. You’re the best!
Heartfelt thanks to Erin Moseley, our fabulous Wine Out and Silent Auction chair, and her creative committee members who quickly came up with the fantastic idea of making the yearly VES Wine Out at Vienna Vintner a virtual event this spring with curbside pickup. We greatly appreciate all the time you once again spent contacting sponsors and planning and coordinating this popular event. Thank you all!
Thank you to Room Parent Coordinator Jessica Sartorius for graciously and quickly sending important messages from the PTA to room parents throughout the year. Also, within hours of schools closing in mid-March due to the pandemic, Jessica proposed that we launch a gift card drive for VES families facing food insecurity. She helped coordinate and publicize two drives, which over two months collected roughly $5,000 in grocery gift cards for VES families. Thank you, Jessica!
And on that note, sincerest gratitude to our awesome room parents -- particularly the 6th-grade room parents -- for your hard work and dedication this year and for helping us connect with VES families virtually, almost overnight. We could not have moved forward as quickly as we did this year without all your support. Thank you!
A million thanks to Kim Bryant, Molly Peng, Moira Jacobsen, Katie Charnoff and Alyssa Lehman of our Staff Appreciation Committee. You seamlessly put together amazing, fun and festive events for our teachers and staff throughout the year. We love your energy and creativity. You’re an outstanding team and we appreciate you!
After-School Class Chair Anna Fravel: Thank you for taking time out of your super busy schedule to help organize the after school activities for VES. We appreciate ALL your time and effort coordinating each activity for the spring, despite them only running for a few short weeks.
Thank you Trish Helsey, our Box Top chair, for taking on this important role. Your time and effort is an important resource for our school!
Will Leonard, our Website Manager. We appreciate your hard work and commitment to the VES community. Thank you for updating and getting information to our families through the VES PTA website.
Thank you to Cassandra Tillinghast and Steve Youssef for volunteering to clean up and beautify the VES garden. We appreciate your dedication to making our school community a better (and greener) place.
Last, but definitely not least, thank you to our Kindergarten Summer Playdate Chairs Amber Miller and Peyton Young for organizing the summer playdates for our incoming Kindergarteners. These are always fun events that help our newest students adjust to their new year at a new school. Thank you!
