THE CONFERENCE CUP
To: Hon. Secretaries of CCC member clubs with 2 or more teams
[cc: to Fix. Secretaries & Chairman of those clubs (where we have an email on record)]
The Board of the Club Cricket Conference is in the process of reviewing its offer to member clubs. As part of this, we have been looking at our cricket programme. Whilst the Representative Fixtures and the Inter-League Sovereign Trophy have been well supported, we unfortunately cannot say the same about The Conference Cup. Quite a number of senior clubs chose not to enter in 2014; and a significant number of first round matches – and even one in the second round – were conceded, sometimes at late notice.
Given that, and given the discussions we are hearing as we travel around the various counties in which we play, umpire, or watch cricket, it has become obvious to us that there is currently an over-provision of cup competitions for current appetites. We have therefore, with apologies to those clubs who have supported us well and would do so again, decided not to run The Conference Cup in 2015.
We shall instead consider, alongside ECB’s consideration of the National Club Championship, what might be provided in 2016 that would better meet member clubs' needs.
I know this news will come as a disappointment to some, but the CCC Board firmly believes it is the best interests of the game for us to take a pause so far as The Conference Cup is concerned.
Chairman, Club Cricket Conference
