Water-Wasting Leaks Plague U.S. Cities
Aging systems waste trillions of gallons a year and result in damaging breaks
Cash-strapped cities like Hoboken, N.J., and Syracuse, N.Y., are contending with leak-prone water systems in various ways. Hoboken has shelled out $2.8 million since 2009 on emergency repairs. The city of 55,000 residents sees about 25 water pipe breaks a year. Syracuse, after spending $77 million from 2009 to 2015 to repair and replace water-related infrastructure serving 145,000 residents, began installing acoustic sensors in pipes so city workers can listen for leaks.
Georgia and California have passed laws requiring utilities to submit annual third-party verified water audits. Other states are considering the idea. Read the whole article here.

Case Study: Installed in One Day, HydraTite Stops infiltration at Pipe Joints in Ash Pond Outfall
The challenge was to eliminate infiltration at pipe joints in an ash pond outfall pipe.
HydraTite internal pipe joint seals were proposed as the solution to eliminate infiltration.
During a routine inspection, company staff identified several sinkholes following the path of the ash pond outfall pipe. Inspection of the reinforced concrete pipe revealed the pipe joints had deteriorated, and the sinkholes were caused by infiltration. The station made the decision to use the HydraTite internal joints seals that are designed for the rehabilitation and restoration of declining pipe joints. Due to the short window for installation, the HydraTite seals were used to eliminate infiltration. Mindful of the environmental issues associated with the ash pond, HydraTech closely monitored and controlled the ash pond level during the installation of the HydraTite seals, minimizing flow.
The limited shutdown time of the outfall pipe made the HydraTite internal pipe seal the ideal solution since no excavation was required. The HydraTite installation was completed in one day, and eliminated further infiltration and prevented ground shifting and sinkholes.
