Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program

Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program provides healthy food and nutrition advice for little ones under age 5 so they can be ready to take on the world.  March celebrates National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day on March 8th!

Do you know the value of WIC benefits?

With Food Assistance Program extra benefits ended in February and high living costs, it can be stressful, but Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has your back. Review what Michigan WIC food packages look like by clicking here.

What does this mean for your family?

  • The WIC food package for a breastfeeding mom is equal to about $80 per month
  • The WIC food package for a breastfeeding infant over the age of 6 months is equal to about $80 per month
  • The WIC food package for a child between the age of 1-5 years old is equal to about $50 per month
On average a WIC family of 4 saves about $260 per month shopping with their WIC benefits! That is equal to about $3,120 per year!

Human papillomavirus (HPV) Awareness Day – March 4, 2023

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States.

In most cases (9 out of 10), HPV goes away on its own within two years without health problems. But when HPV does not go away, it can cause health problems like genital warts and cancer.

There is no way to know who will develop cancer or other health problems from HPV. There are several things you can do to lower your chances of getting HPV including get screened for cervical cancer, get the HPV vaccine, and use condoms.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 231-882-4409.

Immunization Clinics

As of January 1st, residents with Medicare drug coverage will pay nothing out-of-pocket for adult vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), including the shingles and Tetanus-Diphtheria-Whooping Cough vaccines.

COVID-19 Vaccines
Due to waning demand for COVID vaccination, we have discontinued our self-scheduled COVID clinics. Please call us at 231-256-0200 to schedule an appointment for any vaccine, COVID or other.

Reminder, our clinics will ONLY be offering Moderna and Novavax vaccines for everyone 6 months of age and older. These clinics will be open to primary series and booster dose appointments. Parent consent is required for minors.

Additional vaccination sites can be found at vaccines.gov.

COVID-19 Testing Clinics

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department is partnering with Honu labs to offer free, walk-in COVID testing. Both rapid antigen tests and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests are available.

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, and Honu Management Group have collaborated to provide free COVID-19 testing to our community for over a year at POMH. With the availability of at-home testing kits and the decrease of community spread the demand to continue providing testing services at POMH has greatly decreased. February 24th was the last date for testing services at POMH, but drive-up testing is still available at the Leelanau health department office.

  • To pre-register for testing clinic:  click here

Free at home test kits remain available at both Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department offices while supplies last. You are encouraged to have kits on hand before you develop symptoms. Home Rapid Test kits can also be ordered online at https://www.accesscovidtests.org/ or https://special.usps.com/testkits
