A LOW IMPACT FESTIVAL - Shoestring Cottage Blog

"...The green ethos of this low impact festival was impeccable. Other festivals and large events could, and should, learn a thing or two from this one..."
"...both extremely well organised and quite laid back..."
"...extremely nice respectful people, stewards to traders to festival-goers..."
"...The bus shuttle system worked brilliantly..."

1. Each other! Yes, being amongst open-minded and like-minded people, friends old and new, for four whole days, is awesome.

2. The atmosphere. A sense of community; a relaxed, friendly, vibe.

3. Music. The variety, the quality, the exciting discovery of new bands and the joy of familiar tunes.... with some notable favourites (Henge! Mobius Loop!).

4. The food. You really appreciated the wide range of ethically-sourced veggie nosh with loads of vegan options. Lalita's got a good few mentions :)

5. Speakers' Forum. Inspirational, educational, interesting and interactive. Best year yet!

6. Our spacious woodland site, with its awesome trees and views.

7. The Craft Area - its colour, creativity, authenticity and practical skillsharing.

8. The ethos of the festival: how clean the site is during and afterwards; the educational recycling depots; the solar energy running the show; the focus on caring for the planet.

9. Kids' Area, really hitting its stride, delighting kids of all ages (and their grown-ups).

10. The variety and depth of what's on offer: live performances, workshops, talks, games, campfires, music jams, pop-up venues, stalls, saunas, wellbeing and more...

1.  An overwhelming majority answered "Nothing" when asked what was the worst thing about The Green Gathering this year... and rather a lot of you thought "Having to leave at the end" was the worst thing. We must be doing a lot of things right!!

2. The toilets were much improved this year, but they got too full on the last day and weren't always replenished with sawdust and loo roll quickly enough. Sorry; we'll feed back to Compoost, our loo company, and ask them to up the game for 2020.

3. Some of you struggled with the long distance from gates to campsites; however, most agreed the shuttle buses, baggage trikes and wheelbarrows worked better than ever.

4. We installed more dedicated handwash stations near loos this year... but you'd still like more. Cost is always an issue, but we'll try!

5. Several of you expressed concern that it was unnecessary and exploitative to have horse and cart rides in a busy area in hot weather simply for entertainment. We invited a traditional horsedrawn Traveller to the festival, he took it upon himself to offer rides and unfortunately we didn't realise it was happening until late in the day. Apologies to those who were distressed; it won't happen next year.

We were going to list 10 'least loved' things... but you loved The Green Gathering so much we've run out after 5! Don't worry though, we'll keep striving for perfection :)

Poetry Slam Winner Ella Charlton

The amazing 10 year old winner of The Green Gathering Poetry Slam 2019.
Ella beat strong adult competition for a solid well-deserved win, and the prize of a set on stage in The Raconteurs' Delight in 2020.
Congratulations Ella!

Thankyou to the Green Gathering community...

...the families, the young, the elders, the crew, performers, artists, traders and all - for helping create such a magical, inspirational, time-outside-time.

Let's do it again even better for our Tenth Anniversary in 2020

ICE GREEN for handmade vegan ice cream with an option of home-baked, gluten free cones served from a gorgeous vintage caravan. A small business created by a big hearted, hardworking ice cream lover with a mission to create a kinder, greener world - while delighting the tastebuds! This year Amy had coconut and hemp based ice creams to supplement the cashew-based version - great news for people with nut allergies. She also launched an impressive new waste reduction initiative - reuseable coconut shell bowls.

The Silver Ethical Caterer Award goes to...

NUMINUMS for cooking up super ethical vegan fare in a gorgeous little tent in the Craft Area - bicycle powered chickpea mincer and all! Newcomers to Green Gathering, we very much hope they'll be back in 2020 (not booked out solid catering for vegan weddings, which they also seem to be rather good at).

Last year's winners Lalita's and Mr Croquewich returned with their tasty menus too!

How was it, what did you love, what should we change?

Let us know, it'll help us make 2020 even better!

We truly believe The Green Gathering is the BEST value festival around...
The Green Gathering is a festival and a community; an immersive, interactive showcase of skill sharing, creative solutions and off grid living... all powered by wind, sun, people and passion.

It's a festival beyond hedonism for people who love the earth enough to celebrate and save it; a place to party - then wake up and put the world to rights!

With an authentically uncommercial, family friendly and transformative experience, we aim to turn people on to community building, co-operation and
low impact solutions.
The festival is produced on a non-profit basis by Optimistic Trout Productions, a Community Interest Company, and commissioned by the Green Gathering charity (no. 1156593) to promote education for sustainability.

Use this link to switch to clean renewable energy with Ecotricity and we'll receive up to £60 towards making the festival even better, at no extra cost to you.
The Green Gathering has received funding from the Welsh Government, in recognition of the positive impact we bring to Chepstow and beyond.
