Clean Seed Bringing Modern Technology To The Field

Clean Seed Agricultural Technologies just wrapped up an exciting 2014, winning four Innovations Awards at Canada’s Farm Progress Show, including the Inventors Showcase, New Equipment, People’s Choice and the top spot in the Sterling category. This year is starting off with a bang for the company as well as they just announced a major distribution deal with Rocky Mountain Dealerships, one of Canada’s largest agriculture and construction dealership networks.

Clean Seed has spent years developing what it calls a SMART seeding system that incorporates several of their own proprietary technologies, including in-ground openers, seed and fertilizer metering and electronic control systems. The first piece of equipment they’ll be bringing to market is the CX-6 Smart Seeder, which allows for precise plantings based on farmers’ own specifications. The CX-6 is scalable between 40 - 90 feet and targeted towards operations using air seeding technology.

At the bare-bones level, the CX-6 is basically a drill, pulled by a giant tractor that is really, really smart. The machine separates and meters out fertilizer and seed amounts, again based on farmer specifications. The CX-6 also adjusts those measurements as it goes, such as compensating for turns in order to cut down on wasted seeds and fertilize. It allows for up to six products to be metered on the go, all controlled wirelessly through a Bluetooth-enabled touchpad. In fact, Clean Seed was the first to develop wireless “smart” seeding technology. The CX-6 also has on-the-go filling capabilities, via a tow-behind 430 bushel tank that refills the front tank as you are seeding. When it’s empty, it can be unhooked and hauled back to the yard for a refill and repositioned so it’s ready when needed by the main cart, resulting in nearly no down time.

The company is also very proud to put their technology under the “sustainable agriculture” banner. They believe their no-till technology can significantly enhance carbon sequestration in soil, meeting or exceeding the generally accepted half a ton per acre per year. Clean Seed will begin taking orders this summer for 2016 delivery in Canada and plan to announce US distribution later this year, hopefully making it available in the States for the 2017 season. You can check out more information about their Smart Seed technology HERE. They are also publicly traded, under CSX on the Canadian TSX Venture exchange, or CLGPF on the US OTC market. Click HERE to see the CX-6 SMART Seeder in action.
