News from the Farm
Late June 2018

Dear farm friends and CSA members -

The summer solstice was last Thursday, the longest day of the year. Our crops are soaking in these sunlit days - the greenhouses are giving early tomatoes & cucumbers, fresh crops of strawberries are dotting the fields like red honey drops, young kohlrabi, carrots & radishes are all in season, and our field zucchini and summer squash have made it into the store - with much more to follow in abundance on their heels.

The end of spring has been full of new life on the farm! Our first two calves (alfa & mannie) were born on the farm in late May, as well as, four goat kids to join our 30 lambs. We welcomed Sandor, our new livestock guardian dog in-training, to the team to help protect our herds & flocks from increased predator pressure and have been busy raising chickens this spring on our beautiful, healthy pastures.

Strawberry season is almost over - come by and get what's likely to be our last few harvests of berries!  

The first zucchini, summer squash, snap & snow peas, and tomatoes have graced our shelves. They will be available more consistently in the weeks to come!

Fresh chicken will be available: 
  • Friday, June 22nd and Saturday, June 23rd
  • Friday, July 27th and Saturday, July 28th
  • Friday, August 31st and Saturday, September 1st

July 4th Holiday & Food For the Grill: The farm store is closed Wednesday, July 4th, members can pick up shares: Thursday - Saturday next week. Thank you! 

We have organic, grass-fed ground beef, steaks, burgers, heritage lamb & pork: chops, ribs & more all ready for the grill as well as fresh produce! Come by the store / market this weekend! 
Farm Movie Nights!

We've held two Farm Movie Nights this June, screening the documentaries "Food Inc." and "Out Here."

Join us at the Green(house) Screen for the next movie night on July 13. We will be showing "Inhabit: A Permaculture Perspective."

~Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food~

Introducing "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food"! We will introduce one of our farmers and their favorite seasonal farm product with each spotlight, to help you get to know our farm team. First up...Marie!

Marie is one of the lead farmers at Freedom Food Farm. She helps manage our CSA, farm retail operations, livestock and medicinal plant growing. 

She grew up in eastern Pennsylvania surrounded by farms. A deepened interest in farming was sparked by her work in the public health field - she studied medical anthropology in college and continued to do public health research for the next six years. For Marie, it makes sense to look at food through the lens of health, to see food as medicine. “So many of the public health challenges we face can be solved through food,” she says. “Herbal medicine is traditional medicine. There’s a lot to learn from plants...they’re really good teachers. We often think of them as weeds but they’re healing and impactful in people’s lives.”

Working to maintain and build Freedom Food Farm is part of working to build a healthier community for Marie. What Marie finds special about Freedom Food Farm is that we are working to produce a full diet, year-round for people. "That’s very unique about the farm", Marie says. “It takes a lot of dedicated farmers and hard work to make that happen.”

Her seasonal pick from the farm is our lemon balm - it makes a wonderful tea, she says, an antidote to the stress of the world. Our CSA members can come pick lemon balm now from our herb garden!

Recipes from the Fields

Come to the farm store / market to pick up some hakurei turnips and try this recipe for turnip soba noodles! 

According to the chef: "Hakurei are the caviar of the turnip family. They have a tender, almost creamy yet crunchy texture that makes them a joy to snack on raw, straight up out of the ground...you can eat the whole plant because their leafy green tops are flavorful and full of nutrients...Served on a mound of buckwheat soba noodles, this makes a light and healthy summer meal that is quick and easy to prepare."

Grilled Snap Peas with Lemon Oregano Butter



Make your own: Lemon Balm Tisane or Tea 
Simply pour hot water over freshly picked lemon balm leaves. Steep 5-10 minutes or longer if desired. 

Notes: A few teaspoons of fresh lemon balm leaves should be enough for each cup of water. Leaves can be roughly chopped or left whole.

Variations: Add lavender flowers or mint leaves for a lovely herbal blend. Lavender is stress releasing & mint is great for digestion! Lemon slices can also be added and tea can be chilled and served cold. If you prefer sweet tea - add raw honey to taste!
