Warmer Days: Early June 2014

View this email in your browser
Dear Friends, CSA Members and Family,

June is here and so is the main growing season. We will be adding new produce every week through mid-Fall and the farm will be in full production. Keep up-to-date via the newsletters!
- Freedom Food Farm Crew

Farm stand opening days are coming up! The first one is this Saturday!

We hope to see many of you June 7th and/or June 21st at the farm. This is a great opportunity to get plants for your vegetable garden, celebrate the season, learn more about FFF and our practices, and enjoy the farm with friends & family.

To see all farm stand hours and for more info visit the farm stand page of our website.

Agricultural Updates:

We just planted twelve varieties of potatoes, including: purple viking, yukon gold, blue gold and fingerlings...to name a few.  We also are planting celery, celeriac, summer squash, zucchini, and leeks in the fields.

The farmers are still plowing up more land, getting the land prepared for winter squash and carrots. Next we are going to be cutting the rye that we seeded last Fall for straw to mulch our strawberries this Winter (yes we'll have pick-your-own strawberries next year!). We will also be haying for the animals at the same time.

See the list of what we grow and our new produce availability chart for more details.
Livestock Updates:

We recently cleared out all the chard from the greenhouse to make room for tomatoes and gave it to the sows - who went hog wild over it!

Summer means a constant supply of fresh grasses and accessible
bugs and roots for the animals, a very welcome change after the long winter we've all had!

CSA Updates:

Welcome to new CSA members!

Summer markets are starting and we are also adding new markets! See the list of current farmers' markets (and upcoming ones) and CSA pickup sites for more details on where you can pick up your share this summer.

Summer / Fall Shares are available!
Sign up today  for FFF's CSA program.

Pick Your Own is Open!
Every year we grow a pick your own section on the farm, so in addition to the share, CSA members can pick herbs, flowers, cherry tomatoes, husk cherries, hot peppers, etc. at the farm for free!  Throughout the summer the section changes with what's in season. This year pick your own is open during farm stand hours and started in the beginning of June.

Fresh Chicken Available
We will also have delicious fresh poulet rouge pasture-raised broiler chickens (not frozen) in June. Starting Friday, June 6th-Saturday, June. 7th.  If you are interested in purchasing one please stop by the farm one of those days.

Questions about how to prepare items in your CSA share? Ask the farmer at your pick up site or get inspired by the recipes section of our website and recommended culinary resources.
