Unlimited Paid Time Off

With the changing recruiting environment, we continue to encourage businesses to be innovative in their employment practices.

Claudia St. John makes the case for unlimited PTO in this week's video.

We don't have to look much further than the July USDOL Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, the most recent data available, to see the importance of innovative workplace policies.

  • Job openings have declined slightly. During the same 30-day period, hire and separation numbers remained unchanged.
  • All jobs lost to the COVID-19 pandemic have now been recovered.
  • Job opening numbers have – until now – been steadily increasing as have the hire and separation numbers. It’s too soon to tell if the June numbers are a “blip” or indicative of more changes to come.

What employers need to do:

  • Identify the best resources to help you stay informed about labor market activity in the market(s) where you operate and consult those resources regularly.  This remains a volatile labor market.

  • Anticipate continued difficulty recruiting, especially entry-level candidates.

  • If raising pay is necessary to hire new talent, review pay levels for current, experienced employees to ensure internal equity.

  • Streamline your application process.  Many candidates report “giving up” trying to apply online because of a confusing/convoluted/redundant application process.

  • Be respectful of your applicants and their investment in the application and interview process.  Don’t become one of those badly reviewed employers on social media.
