Claudia St. John shares the importance of innovation in your workplace in this HR Minute and the lessons to be learned from unionization.


A 2021 Gallup poll showed that 68% of Americans approve of unions.  That’s the highest number since 1965.  In that same poll, 77% of young adults approved of unions, and 72% with incomes under $40,000 indicated their support.

In January, we reported that 2 Starbucks stores in Buffalo, NY, had voted to unionize.  That number has increased to 133 in just 6 months. That still isn’t a big percentage of the 9,000 Starbucks locations, but it does represent a lot of growth in a short period. Organizing campaigns are also underway at Apple and Amazon.

The Biden administration has long been committed to championing workers’ rights and is committed to helping unions expand.  The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is contemplating labor law changes that will make it easier for unions to organize workers.  Currently, only about 10.3% of US workers (approximately 14 million) belong to a union.

Quick Tips for Employers:

•    Keep informed of legislative changes impacting pay equity at federal, state, and local levels in all the locations where you do business. If you currently have a policy that prohibits employees from discussing salaries, it is time to relegate it to the dustbin.

•    Consider what short- and long-term actions you may need to take to attract and retain women in your workforce.

•    Stay informed and up to date on union activity in the geographic area(s) where you operate.
