May Update

Happy May! Welcome to our monthly newsletter, where we provide updates on the progress and work of the team.

The RoboSub competition for this year will be held online, so we are all hard at work on the deliverables, which includes a technical design report, skills videos showing off subsystems of our submarine, and an optional video showing our vehicle behaviors and capabilities. In addition, we wrapped up much of our in-person work as we head into summer.

This month has consisted of finishing up most of the in-person work on the sub and planning for our submissions for the RoboSub competition.

This past month:

  • Reprinted our electronics chassis, the structure that holds our electronics to be more sturdy and optimized, and a holder for the ZED camera

  • Addressed our leak issues by conducting leak tests in the Wilson Center

  • Started manufacturing our torpedo launcher

  • Worked on the design for a gripper that could be used to pick up objects

Upcoming Goals:

  • Currently in the process of anodizing our parts

  • Working on deliverables for the competition, including the technical design report and skills video on the hull design

  • Working on potential CAD animations for the videos


The Software team has been hard at work testing the sub at the MHL (Marine Hydrodynamics Lab) and debugging our software so that we will be able to complete competition tasks.

This past month:

  • Ironed out bugs, networking issues, and electrical problems that slowed testing progress

  • Developed new machine learning models for our computer vision and collected a large amount of data to train new models on

  • Tested and documented using our simulation on AWS for better access and a more uniform environment

Upcoming Goals:

  • Continue to develop and test our software necessary to complete our chosen competition tasks

  • Continue to document our approach for future members, the TDR (technical design report), and sensor optimization video

  • Begin filming our sensor optimization skills video

  • Define and begin summer research and development projects into custom electronics


This month:

  • Updated the website with new photos of the sub + new leadership

  • Took sub footage at the MHL


This month:

  • Updated budget spreadsheets to be up to date

  • Wrapping up the semester
