Dear << Test First Name >>
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
DATE: WEDNESDAY 23 OCTOBER 2019
PLACE: UNIONS NSW TRAINING ROOM 1
377 SUSSEX ST SYDNEY (NEAR CNR GOULBURN ST)
Dr Daniel Ghezelbash: Senior Lecturer; Social Justice Clinic Director
Dr Daniel Ghezelbash joined Macquarie University as a Senior Lecturer in Law in 2014 and now heads Macquarie University’s new Social Justice Clinic. He teaches courses in administrative law, human rights, refugee law and social justice advocacy. He operates a pro bono refugee law practice and is a Special Counsel at the National Justice Project. His goal is to enhance protections for refugees and asylum seekers.
Daniel is also a member of the management committee of Refugee Advice and Casework Services, the only dedicated free refugee legal centre in NSW.
His book, Refuge Lost: Asylum Law in an Interdependent World, examines the spread of mandatory detention, maritime interdiction and offshore processing policies from the United States to Australia and beyond.
Dr Ghezelbash feels that Australia’s current hard-line asylum policies could trigger a race to the bottom, with the potential to completely unravel the international refugee protection system.
Come along and hear what our guest speaker has to say about the way bad policies are spread around the world (and Australia’s role in that process) and how we can push back against that by fostering more inter-state cooperation.
Also, what role Australia could play in making that happen.

LETTER TO LABOR LEADER
At our last meeting in September, members decided to write to Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, to express concern re his plan to bring the ALP National Conference forward to next year, with the specific aim of shortening Labor's National Platform.
Back in June, the Labor Leader was quoted by a Labor source, as suggesting the party needed to “gut” the 300-page ALP platform but another Labor frontbencher said, “I think he said reduce the platform, not gut.”
We are very conscious of the fact that it's important the Party does not reject the refugee policies that were adopted over successive National Conferences. Many of these are progressive policies that Labor for Refugees fought hard to have included in the Party Platform.

ELECTION OF L4R NATIONAL OFFICERS
An election was held on the 8 October last for our L4R National Officers. The two National Co-Convenors elected were Shane Prince (from L4R NSW) and Claire Single (from L4R Qld). Nizza Siano was elected as the National Secretary. The National Co-ordinating Committee comprises of three members from each L4R group nationally.
