DEBATE IN LABOR CAUCUS RE OFFSHORE DETENTION CENTRES -
LETTER TO MPs MELISSA PARKE AND ANNA BURKE

Labor for Refugees wrote to Melissa Parke and Anna Burke on the 15 October last, wishing them luck in their intention to argue in Labor Caucus, that offshore detention centres for asylum seekers be closed.  Melissa stated that conditions at the two offshore centres on Nauru and Manus Island have deteriorated over the past 16 months and if human rights standards and oversight can't be improved, they should be shut down.

Our letter can be read via the following link - L4RLetterParke&Burke

On Tuesday of this week, we learnt that Labor deferred this vote in Caucus until 10 November because Senators were not available for the debate.

Dear Richard

Leader of the opposition

Dear Bill,

I understand that on 10 November,  Labor Caucus will discuss a motion regarding offshore detention of asylum seekers/refugees.

I hope that you will support this motion.  For too long Labor has pursued the cruel and inhumane policies of indefinite detention and offshore processing.

It is time for this to end.  We are better than this.

Yours sincerely

CHILDREN'S WEEK - LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN

Children’s Week takes place annually from 24 October to 1 November. It celebrates the right of the child to enjoy childhood.  I urge members to support our letter writing campaign to NSW MPs.

Please read the details of this event at the following link Children'sWeekCampaignOct15 which will also provide you with the email addresses for the Sydney Morning Herald and NSW MPs.  You can send them your letter, highlighting the plight of children locked up in Australian Immigration Detention.  Please take advantage of this celebration to demand that our politicians must do better.

The Migration Amendment (Complementary Protection and Other Measures) Bill 2015

Yet another very worrying piece of legislation was tabled last week, by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, to strengthen requirements for people who are not refugees as described in the Migration Act, but cannot be returned to their home country due to risk of harm.

This Bill seeks to rule out protection for people who face a "generalised" risk, can change their behaviour and can relocate to a safer part of their home country.

The potential laws have been labelled as dangerous by human rights lawyer David Manne.

Mr Manne, the executive director of the Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre, told the ABC the proposed laws could see asylum seekers deported to war zones such as Syria.

The bill has been referred to the Senate's Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee, with a report due early next year.

IT MUST BE OPPOSED.
