Three B Summit by The Lukes Network

The road to California's goal of 100% clean energy for all by 2045 is one paved with opportunities for innovation, technology, resilience, and leadership. Electrifying transportation, electrifying industrial buildings (as well as the commercial and residential sectors), and increasing the use of renewable energy all while maintaining the reliability of the grid also requires overcoming anticipated and unforeseen challenges.  Effective communication and alignment are keys to inspiring action.  Outreach to, as well as education and engagement of, businesses large and small and residents from all walks of life and economic backgrounds, are critical to California's bold goal.

Over the past 15 years, the state has passed several laws that required California's energy governing bodies to develop strategic plans, set and adjust targets and create incentive programs aimed at an ambitious energy transition for all.  In 2006, California passed AB 32, and it required the state to lower greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.  In 2016, the state achieved this goal four years ahead of plan. Key among the laws passed since AB 32 is SB 100, which in 2018 increased the 2030 renewables goal from 50% to 60% and required all retail electricity to be carbon-free by 2045.

At our Three B Summit this month, we talked with experts from Southern California Edison and SDG&E about the big picture and the utilities' own frameworks to support and achieve California's 2045 goal.  Our April conversation also focused on the low-hanging fruit: SCE's and SDG&E's energy efficiency programs and opportunities for the built environment.  Contact your utility company to learn if your industrial or commercial operation or household qualifies.

Our Three B Summit became an international event with GAIA First, a Paris-based NGO working with partnering with RINA and BREEZE to  identify and optimize technologies and ship design, in order to create a ship that will collect ocean garbage and convert it into hydrogen energy through a system of gasification. GAIA First also sparks clean-up events in cities around the world to engage communities to come together and have fun while being part of the solution.

The TLN Team looks forward to more conversations to demystify sustainability and opportunities in energy and beyond. Stay tuned and follow us on social @thelukesnetwork.
