NEW CASTLE – Marilyn Hunt (nee Petrie), 82, passed away peacefully, on January 20, 2023 at Churchman Village. Marilyn died from complications from covid, pneumonia, cancer, dementia, among others. She was born January 19, 1941 in Chicago, daughter of Frances (Fleischmann) and Raymond Petrie.
Marilyn graduated Mundelein College (now Loyola University) in Chicago with honors in 1962 and taught elementary school science and middle school biology. She married Horst K. Hunt in 1962 until his death after nearly 37 years of marriage. Marilyn showed great resiliency, moving every 4-7 years while living in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Texas. She reinvented herself as a registered nurse when teaching positions were not available, specializing in rehabilitation and home health nursing. Marilyn finally retired to New Castle, Delaware in 2001. She enjoyed international travel (60+ countries) as well as the friendship of both her Red Hat and Delaware Herbalist sisters.
Surviving her are her son Carl Hunt; daughters, Lorelei Hunt (Gary), Anna Hunt (Gabriel); brother Thomas Petrie (Marlene); Nephews Jonathan Petrie (Sarah), Timothy Petrie (Rachel); three grandnieces and one grandnephew. Marilyn was a great lover of animals and is survived by her dogs Maxy, Precious and cat Sheba.
Marilyn’s favorite hobby was gardening. Her happiness always bloomed in her perpetual garden. As she herself used to say, “puttering around in her garden, and sitting out on the deck were blissful.” Marilyn will be remembered for her warm nature, unique sense of humor, humility as well as compassion for others.
