This month the Organization of the American States and the Pan American Health Organization signed the joint declaration Social Protection in Health: advancing towards Universal Health Coverage.” The document signed by José Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the OAS and Carissa Etienne, Director of PAHO was done within the framework of the 44th General Assembly of the OAS which took place in Asuncion, Paraguay that had as its theme “Development with social inclusion.” This agreement will be a good opportunity to strengthen cooperation between both institutions in the area of social inclusion. Participants of the Second Edition of the Diploma Course in Social Protection for the Americas joined in a fieldwork visit to one of the programs led by the Solidarity and Social Investment Fund of Chile, FOSIS during the onsite portion of the course. The visit was a great opportunity for the group of participants, composed of 29 experts in Social Protection of the region, to see first-hand the intersectoral policies implemented by FOSIS as well as its application. The visit is part of the Diploma Course, designed and coordinated by the OAS/IASPN in collaboration with the Center for Public Policies of the Catholic University of Chile. Read the entire article here

Maryse Robert, Director of the Department of Economic and Social Development and Alexandra Barrantes, Coordinator of the Inter-American Social Protection Network of the OAS met with Maria Fernanda Villegas, Minister of Social Development of Chile to discuss the key points of their agendas on development and social protection. The meeting was a good opportunity to reinforce the ties between the OAS and the Ministry, which have been cooperation partners in programs such as “Puente in the Caribbean and the first and second edition of the “Diploma Course on Social Protection for the Americas." The Minister of the Secretariat of Social Action (SAS) of Paraguay, Hector Cardenas received a visit from Sherry Tross, Executive Secretary for Integral Development of the Organization of American States. The visit, took place within the framework of the 44th General Assembly of the OAS, and marks the continuation of strong ties between the OAS and SAS in view of action plants that promote Social Inclusion.
