Summer 2014
A Message from the Executive Director:

Generosity. Your generosity makes possible all that The Arc is able to do to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community. That generosity takes many forms:

Thank you for becoming a member of The Arc; your financial support really helps.

Thank you for supporting The Arc’s summer camp. Austin Avenue United Methodist Church held a cake auction that raised funds for camp scholarships. The Kiwanis Club of Waco held a golf tournament that benefited our camp. The Heart of Texas Electric Cooperative granted funds for camp. The Heart of Texas Autism Network provided a camp scholarship. Brent and Cindy Mattson made a major, incredibly generous donation to underwrite camp expenses.

Thank you for supporting The Opportunity Center. Board President, Charles Johnson, donated computers. Mike Perry donated a large screen TV. Doreen Ravenscroft donated funds for a work table. The Heart of Texas Autism Network provided a scholarship. The Paul and Jane Meyer Family Foundation granted significant funds for a new pottery room.

Thank you for being a donor. Vicki Underwood, Mike and Bernice Perry, Alvin and Bernice Sykora, Bealls, and Grainger were recent donors. Eddie and Sharron Odom made a most generous donation.

Thank you for supporting United Way. About one third of The Arc’s funding comes from the generosity of the local United Way campaign. Thanks also to the employees of Atmos Enery who came to tour The Arc as part of their United Way campaign.

In all of these ways and more, your generosity translates into tangible care and support for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thank you for being such a generous people.

Summer Camp

The Arc Summer Camp is in full swing. Melinda Vorderkunz is doing a great job as camp director. We have 50 campers, 19 staff and 2 volunteers. They have been busy doing various activities throughout the week.  Our campers are going on field trips to the movies, the library, the park, fishing, The Mayborn Museum,  and every Friday they go swimming at the Doris Miller YMCA.  Every week they get to enjoy playing the Wii, watch movies in their classroom and watch movies with popcorn in the church's movie theater. They had a hot dog cook out to celebrate the 4th of July. They will have pizza parties, sensory parties,  and jump in a bounce house. The campers are also participating in art activities facilitated by Doreen Ravenscroft and her volunteers from Waco Cultural Arts. On August 5th, near the end of camp, there will be an art exhibit displaying their art in the Fellowship Hall.

The Opportunity Center

The Opportunity Center is growing with an enrollment now of 7 young adults on the autism spectrum.  Brandy Abel-Clark, Anita Karney, Jordan Adams, and Melinda Vorderkunz are doing a wonderful job working with these adults.

Thanks to generous donors, the facility located at 1825 Morrow Avenue now has new computers, a big screen TV, and a first-rate pottery room is under construction.

After School Program

It is time to start planning for the upcoming school year. From 3:00 to 5:30 pm each school day, The Arc offers care for school-aged children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are unable to be cared for in traditional daycare settings due to the level of care they require. This state-licensed program enables working parents to pursue full-time employment. The program serves the Waco, Connally, and Midway school districts.

Our program starts on the first day of school. Waco and Connally start August 25th and Midway starts on August 26th.
