ECPA Forum Examines Natural Gas Outlook in the Region 

Natural gas has the potential to bring down the cost of electricity—especially in the Caribbean and Central America—while making a positive impact on the environment by replacing higher-carbon fuels, according to several energy experts who spoke at a recent OAS forum. The event was sponsored by the OAS Department of Sustainable Development, the clearinghouse for the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA). Read more

Architect and sustainable design expert María-Paz Gutiérrez visited Chile and Peru to look at some of the challenges of designing sustainable structures, whether in dense urban areas or in remote reaches of the Amazon. Read more

ECPA Hosts Workshops in Colombia 

Two recent workshops in Colombia trained entrepreneurs, public officials, and students in innovative techniques involved in closed-loop production, an approach that seeks to design, manufacture, and deliver products and services in ways that are more sustainable. Read more

Shedding Light on Energy Innovation

An ECPA-supported initiative is bringing solar-powered reading lamps to rural Peru, providing an affordable, clean alternative to polluting, dangerous, and expensive forms of lighting such as diesel lamps. The key to the project is a cellphone app that allows users to buy the lamp via small weekly payments. Read more

Green Municipal Buildings

Cutting energy consumption in schools, health centers, and municipal government buildings is the goal of an ECPA initiative being carried out in three cities in the region: Goiânia, Brazil; Valdivia, Chile; and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The project, managed by Florida International University (FIU), expects to reduce energy use in 400 buildings in those cities. Read more

Spotlight on Sustainable Energy in the Caribbean


A regional workshop on energy in the Caribbean will bring together senior government delegates, development partners, field experts, and others to discuss strategies to promote a more sustainable energy future. The event will be held on August 19 in Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. Read more
