Meet the Pros: Ashlan Cousteau
Ashlan Cousteau is a wildly successful television personality and MJ-School alum. Ashlan is the co-star of the Travel Channel's Caribbean Pirate Treasure, a former Entertainment Tonight correspondent, and a fill-in anchor for E! News. Ashlan also has production experience -- she's worked behind the scenes on The Today Show, Access Hollywood, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Saturday Night Live.

Ashlan will be holding an information session on Tuesday, February 5 from 4:00 to 5:00pm in the Halls of Fame (Carroll 128). This is a rare opportunity for students interested in any aspect of broadcast news, television, filmmaking, or production to hear from one of the industry's best. Read more about Ashlan here. John Sweeney Interview Fund
The John Sweeney Interview Fund provides funding for a senior advertising major to travel to pursue jobs and internship opportunities with top advertising agencies. This special application closes TOMORROW, February 1. Click here to apply. 

UNC School of Media and Journalism undergraduate majors who have been admitted to the school are eligible to apply for funding through a wide array of awards made possible by generous donors. Applications and deadlines vary. Each application will close at 11:59 p.m. the night of the deadline. Please review guidelines carefully and follow directions. Awards differ from scholarships in that award amounts are paid directly to the student rather than to the student’s UNC account. Awards may have tax implications.

UNC Ad Club McKinney Info Session

UNC Ad Club is hosting a info session with McKinney agency next Wednesday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. in the Halls of Fame. There will be three professionals from McKinney, including two UNC Alumni, and this info session is open to all MJ students. Here is more information:

McKinney is an advertising agency based in Durham, North Carolina with a second office in New York, NY. Since 2003, McKinney has ranked 10th of 300+ winning agencies at the Effie awards. They have helped 25 brands across 24 categories earn recognition 99 times, including: Sherwin Williams, Samsung, Audi, Crocs, and Lenovo. They have a summer "Minternship" program and entry-level job opportunities in both Durham, NC and NYC.

Women in Sports Tech Fellowship
WiST supports university students eager to begin their careers in the sports tech industry. We define the sports tech industry broadly*, and encourage proposals that combine the themes of sports and technology creatively. Fellowships are an integral part of how we propel women into important roles and leadership positions in our industry. This Fellowship grant of $5,000 is open to all enrolled women full-time undergraduate and graduate students at an accredited university located in the United States. Students must be in good academic standing.

The 2019 WiST Fellowship project is to be conducted at a sports technology business of your own choosing or at one of our identified businesses. WiST provides a list of sports technology companies who have projects in mind for WiST Fellows, which can be found at sportstech.careers.com. However, we welcome and encourage you to bring us your own project proposal, listed on the same jobs portal, with the company of your choice.

Paid Internships
Multiple Summer Internships - FiveThirtyEight / New York, NY
FiveThirtyEight is hiring college students or recent graduates to work as paid interns this summer in the following positions:
  1. Politics data reporter. This intern will help our politics team as it ramps up coverage of the 2020 election. The internship will be a mix of writing, research, data-mining and fact-checking.
  2. Sports data reporter. This intern will write, conduct research and contribute to longer features. Basic knowledge of the major sports is essential, and expertise in topics outside the traditional areas of coverage is a plus.
  3. Copy editor. This intern will assist our copy desk in editing stories for accuracy, numeracy, grammar and style, with a particular focus on fact-checking and research.
  4. Podcast intern. This person will help produce our award-winning podcasts, including doing topic research, setting up the recording studio and editing. Candidates should have basic audio-editing skills and an interest in data journalism.
  5. Data visualization intern. This person will design, edit and produce static graphics to accompany articles. The ideal candidate will have experience making data graphics using design tools such as Illustrator or programming languages such as JavaScript, Python and R. General comfort with numbers is essential, as is experience with spreadsheet software such as Excel.

Writer - Public Impact / Chapel Hill, NC
Public Impact’s mission is to improve education dramatically for all students, especially low-income students, students of color, and other students whose needs historically have not been well met. We conduct research to understand what leads to better outcomes, and we develop and implement innovative solutions to create dramatic improvements for children.  We work across political party lines, collaborating with anyone committed to serving students whose needs have not been well met in schools.  One of our largest initiatives, Opportunity Culture, is rapidly spreading across North Carolina and the nation.  This work has approximately doubled students’ odds of making high growth in reading and math, and most of these students attend high-poverty schools.

This individual would be a critical part of researching, documenting and sharing Public Impact’s work – primarily in writing, but also potentially using other media skills (videography, photography). We are looking for someone who has a social justice bent, but who is very practical, organized and empathetic with multiple people’s positions. Someone who loves to explain and influence through a variety of writing, weaving together making the point and emotional connection. This individual will be working closely with our senior editor on policy papers, media pieces, copyediting and proposals. They may also work with the policy team. We are looking for a leader, not just a writer; this leader-professional combination is the profile of most people on our team and one reason for our success.

Events & Digital Media Coordinator - Duke University Dewitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy / Durham, NC
The DeWitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy is Duke University’s hub for the study of journalism. We study the interaction between news media and policy; we support watchdog and accountability reporting in the U.S. and around the world; and we teach about the media’s role in democracy. Founded in 1973, the DeWitt Wallace Center (DWC) is part of the Sanford School of Public Policy, and shares in the School’s mission of teaching, research, and policy engagement, with the goal of putting knowledge in service to society.

This full-time position at Duke University supports a Center that teaches journalism and media studies within the Sanford School of Public Policy. The Events and Digital Media Coordinator will coordinate special events with journalists, media experts, alumni and students and generate social media and website content. The coordinator’s challenge will be to grow student participation through an active digital media network and events program, targeting Duke student and campus community audiences. Some events will take place after regular business hours and on weekends. This position reports to the Center Director and Associate Director. This position is approved through June 30, 2020.
