MJ-School Opportunities
Bloomberg-UNC-Berkeley Business Journalism Diversity Program
Through the Bloomberg-UNC-Berkeley Business Journalism Diversity Program, students will have the opportunity to join one of two week-long programs that will show how business journalists report on what's most at stake in the economy, global stock and bond markets, government regulations and the job market. One program will be at the UNC School of Media and Journalism and one at the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley.

The programs take place in May and June 2019. All costs to participants in the program, including lodging and transportation, will be covered. The deadline to apply is January 29, 2019. Click here to apply.

Holding Power Accountable Lecture Series: Caitlin Owens
Learn how a recent MEJO grad – working for a Washington media startup – is generating a lot of buzz with smart and punchy political journalism – 200 words at a time. Join us for a discussion with Caitlin Owens (MEJO ’14), a health care and policy reporter for Axios in Washington, D.C., as part of the “Holding Power Accountable” lecture series. “Holding Power Accountable” features journalists who are leading the examination of the people and organizations that hold power in society. The event will be held on Jan. 28, 2019 at 12 p.m. in the Freedom Forum. Registration is required and spots are limited. Click here to RSVP.

Meet the Pros: Ginger Melton
Ginger Melton is a PR Assistant at Tibi, a women's sportswear collection based in New York. A 2017 alum, Ginger has worked in fashion PR since her graduation. Ginger will be holding an information session via Zoom on Tuesday, January 29 from 4:00 to 5:00pm in the Halls of Fame (Carroll 128). This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in PR careers in New York, especially those seeking to work in fashion. Click here to sign up. 

Meet the Pros: Ashlan Cousteau
Ashlan Cousteau is a wildly successful television personality and MJ-School alum. Ashlan is the co-star of the Travel Channel's Caribbean Pirate Treasure, a former Entertainment Tonight correspondent, and a fill-in anchor for E! News. Ashlan also has production experience -- she's worked behind the scenes on The Today Show, Access Hollywood, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Saturday Night Live.

Ashlan will be holding an information session on Tuesday, February 5 from 4:00 to 5:00pm in the Halls of Fame (Carroll 128). This is a rare opportunity for students interested in any aspect of broadcast news, television, filmmaking, or production to hear from one of the industry's best. Read more about Ashlan here. Media Intern - Sierra Club / Washington, DC
The Sierra Club’s D.C. communications internship provides hands-on experience in crafting strategic communications, pitching reporters, organizing media outreach, and writing professionally in a variety of contexts -- all while representing the Sierra Club, the nation's oldest and largest environmental organization. Interns in this paid, temporary position will have an unparalleled opportunity to learn about and engage with energy and environmental policy and politics at the national level.    

The media intern works closely with the Deputy Communications Director and other Communications staff to plan and carry out communications and media relations strategies, supporting a wide range of national programs and initiatives.  Researches, drafts messages, talking points, press releases, compiles data, provides event and meeting support, and tracks and reports on media coverage.  As needed, writes and designs other materials for use with internal audiences, including press compilation reports and strategy summaries. Journalism Fellowship - Metpro / Los Angeles, CA
Metpro is a unique program started in 1984 to help beginning journalists launch careers and boost diversity in newsrooms. 

The Los Angeles Times is seeking high-potential, highly motivated aspiring journalists with diverse backgrounds or life experiences. The program’s main thrust is to provide participants - recent college graduates or journalists with limited professional experience - the training and support necessary to put them on a fast track to success. 

Metpro is not an internship but a formal fellowship customized to help trainees realize their goals. The paid, full-time program lasts up to two years and is included in the Los Angeles Times Guild. We accept applications from those eligible to work in the U.S. with up to three years of experience in a professional newsroom or up to five years in media settings such as weeklies and community newsrooms, websites, fellowships or freelance work.
