Meet the Pros: Leah Ashburn
Leah Ashburn is the president of Highland Brewing and a marketing professional with over two decades of industry experience. Leah will be holding office hours with MJ-School students on Thursday, January 24th from 9:30-10:30am. This is an amazing opportunity for those interested in spirits marketing, entrepreneurship, or careers in Asheville! Location is TBD. Click here to sign up for a 15 minute slot. Environment and Science Communication Career Panel
On Wednesday, January 23, hear from professionals working at the intersection of the environment, science and communications in this panel. Our guests are experts working in various communications fields including environmental advocacy, environmental journalism, government and corporate communication. Topics covered will include panelists' career experiences and potential career paths for students. The panel is from 5:30pm-7:00pm on 1/23 in the Freedom Forum Conference Center.

Meet the Pros: Maggie Kash
Based in Washington, D.C., MJ-school alumna Maggie Kash directs the Sierra Club’s communications department, with a staff of 60 employees with expertise spanning from journalistic to visual communications to media relations. Maggie will be holding an information session on Wednesday, January 23 from 4:00 to 5:00pm. The event will be held in Carroll Hall, in the area outside the Career Services and Student Records offices. Click here to sign up.

Meet the Pros: Ginger Melton
Ginger Melton is a PR Assistant at Tibi, a women's sportswear collection based in New York. A 2017 alum, Ginger has worked in fashion PR since her graduation. Ginger will be holding an information session via Zoom on Tuesday, January 29 from 4:00 to 5:00pm in the Halls of Fame (Carroll 128). This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in PR careers in New York, especially those seeking to work in fashion. Click here to sign up. 

Meet the Pros: Ashlan Cousteau
Ashlan Cousteau is a wildly successful television personality and MJ-School alum. Ashlan is the co-star of the Travel Channel's Caribbean Pirate Treasure, a former Entertainment Tonight correspondent, and a fill-in anchor for E! News. Ashlan also has production experience -- she's worked behind the scenes on The Today Show, Access Hollywood, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Saturday Night Live.

Ashlan will be holding an information session on Tuesday, February 5 from 4:00 to 5:00pm in the Halls of Fame (Carroll 128). This is a rare opportunity for students interested in any aspect of broadcast news, television, filmmaking, or production to hear from one of the industry's best. Read more about Ashlan here. Information Session: MEJO 490 - International Media Markets, China (Maymester in China)
This short-term global immersion to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong will give students an introduction to the Chinese media market, the most dominant emerging media system in the world.

Please note that this is the last information session before course applications are due on Friday, Feb. 1. The information session will be held on Thursday, January 17 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Halls of Fame.

Sports Communication Certificate Program
January 30, 2019 is the deadline to apply for the Sports Communication Certificate Program. 12 students will be admitted, and will be given priority for a seat in the MEJO 376, 377 and 476 courses.

To apply, just give Professor John Sweeney in Carroll 235 a copy of your resume and a one-page (maximum length) typed statement on why you wish to be admitted. Your reasons can be career-oriented or simply intellectual curiosity. There is no "correct" answer. Please staple a cover sheet on your application with your name, expected graduation date, sequence or major and GPA. The names of the students admitted will be posted in the general Student Records Office and Professor Sweeney's office door on Wednesday, February 13 at noon.

Students not admitted are still welcome to take the sports communication courses. They may also complete the certificate program. The formal admission simply gives you priority getting into the classes. Contact John Sweeney at if you have any questions. Click here for more information.

Affordable Housing Report for America Position - The Charlotte Observer / Charlotte, NC
The Charlotte Observer is among news organizations from across the nation selected to take part in Report for America’s annual public service initiative to boost reporting on under-covered issues and neighborhoods, organizers announced Thursday.

Report for America trains young reporters and sends them to newsrooms for at least one year to report on specific neighborhoods and topics. The Report for America journalist for the Observer will focus on affordable housing and poverty. To apply or read more, click here.

Summer 2019 Interns - Ogilvy / New York, NY, Chicago, IL and Washington, DC
We’re aiming to build a company of innovators. We’re looking for relentless curiosity and pervasive creativity. Your own curiosity has gotten you this far; now see if it can earn you a spot as an Summer Intern at Ogilvy.

Ogilvy Summer Interns will learn the marketing communications industry by supporting a team and participating in an ongoing intern project. Summer Interns will also participate in a weekly lunch and learn series designed to expose them to different areas of Ogilvy. The program is offered in New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC. Each program has a unique focus, depending on the clients and work housed within each office.

Intern Video Editors - UNC Office of University Development / Chapel Hill, NC
The Office of University Development seeks intern video editors. The intern editor will cut pieces on a weekly basis, including promotional films and short-form videos varied in nature, on deadline. Candidate should work well independently as well as enjoy collaboration, communication and creativity within a team environment. Candidate should have strong interest in creating equal access to higher education. Applicant must be proficient in editing with Adobe Premiere Pro. Experience with Adobe AfterEffects, Cinema4D and similar is a plus. Interest in graphics work a must. Intern Editor could occasionally work on location and film independently.

Ideally seeking two intern editors: one to focus on repurposing existing footage to leverage into current content for web and social storytelling in partnership with Producer; one to work in tandem with the Lead Photographer/Videographer in planning and producing Spring ‘19 content capture and post-production on pieces such as promo films and social media content including some work on location. Interns will swap roles halfway through internship.

The schedule is 15 Weeks, 16 hours/week. Monday February 4 through Friday April 26 (LDOC), with opportunity to continue work after conclusion of spring semester. Friday March 8-Sunday March 17 off. Compensation: 15 Weeks at 16 hours/week at $17.50/hour.
