Council will soon take up a new ordinance informed by the master plan, and TONIGHT Wednesday, Apr 21st at 5:30 pm we'll host a community meeting to discuss this ordinance in collaboration with the Fresh Pond Residents Alliance. Join us?

Our trees and urban forest have been high on the agenda these past few years. In 2017, Green Cambridge and others petitioned the city for a tree task force, and from that process came the Urban Forest Master Plan in late 2019 -- a groundbreaking document that gives us a plan to move forward. At the same time, the community fought for a tree moratorium while the Master Plan process was underway to help preserve the tree canopy we have left until a new tree protection ordinance could be drafted.

Well, that time is now!

See you TONIGHT!

They partnered with local organizations to offer a collection of FREE special events, service opportunities, learning programs, and nature experiences that will connect you with the ecology of our community—our birds, our plants, our waterways, and wetlands, our bugs—even our microbiomes—and the racial and social inequities that contribute to environmental decline.

You can check out the calendar here and sign up for the ones you like, and thank you!

We were bee hive permit #9 in the city and as of Monday, April 19th, we have a very long-awaited bee hive at the Hurley Street growing location!

Green Cambridge Donated Land in the Alewife!

We're excited to share the news that we have a building block for our future growth--a small parcel of land between the Alewife Reservation, the Alewife T station, and along the bike path to Belmont! We're are so thankful to receive this donation by descendants of the Hill family.

With its interesting history of being originally part of a 2,000-acre tract between Belmont and Charlestown, this site along the Alewife Brook part of a contextual narrative of places across New England--the transfer from indigenous people, into agriculture, then industrial uses, and now real estate development that we all live within the Boston region.

What will we do with it? We're not sure yet, but we want you involved in this process!

Like many properties in the city, the first step we took was to get an EPA Phase 1 review -- a kind of historic understanding of how the land was used. We're currently going through the Phase 2 process, which will involve soil sampling.

More to come! We're looking forward to telling the story of this site.

Staff News!

We're happy to announce we've hired a new Program Coordinator! Cambridge native Isabella joined us last summer to help run the summer youth program, and came back in January to help build and grow our programming! It's amazing to have another staff member! Welcome, Isabella!

In other news, we just found out we've been selected to be a TerraCorps site partner for 2021-2022. This means we'll have another staff member for the year! This program helps prepare and mobilize emerging leaders to help communities gain access to and conserve land for people and nature.

Combined with our volunteers, board, and advisors, we're building capacity to create a more sustainable city and to protect the environment for the health and safety of all!

Your donations keep us going! Please give today at just $5 a month to ensure this important work continues into the future, and THANK YOU!
