Meet Our Staff!

Karen is an Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, and Fellow in the American College of Childbirth Educators. As such, she has over 30 years of experience working with expectant parents as well as breastfeeding couples. During her tenure at Northwest Community Hospital she was the recipient of 2 Daisy Awards which is an award that recognizes excellence and extraordinary compassion in nursing. She was also the recipient of the Employee of the Month award.
Pat is a registered nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with over 35 years of experience working with moms and babies. Prior to starting her Lactation career she was a Special Care Nursery nurse working with many different newborn situations.  During her tenure at the hospital Pat received the Employee of the Month award twice, the Nursing Excellence award, the Chicago area Nursing Spectrum award nomination, and was presented the coveted “Employee of the year” in 2012.

Do you know someone who is?  Pass along this great coupon for a Free Prenatal Breastfeeding class!  What better way to be prepared?  This class is two hours in length and explores the many benefits of breastfeeding, and helps a mother understand how she can start off on the right foot with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is both instinctive and a learned behavior. Even if you have not  made up your mind about breastfeeding, this is an excellent class to find out more about it, and based on that information, make an informed decision about feeding your baby.  Click here for a list of upcoming dates.

Mark Your Calendar!
Mother's Support Group meets every Wednesday and one Saturday during the month from 10:00-11:30 am in the IBMC. 

This group is open to all mothers, nursing and non-nursing and meets for one and a half hours. Weekly topics will be provided for discussion.
This is a great opportunity for mothers to network and support one another.
Older siblings are welcome and light refreshments will be provided.

APL Now Offers CPR Classes

Infant and Child CPR ~ April 25th 2015 from 10:00am-12:00pm
This class will focus on infant/child CPR and choking.  It is perfect for both parents and grandparents who want to learn/practice CPR, and how to respond to a choking emergency, but do not need a certification card.

Fee: $5 for APL families and grandparents
        $25 for non-APL families

Frequently Asked Questions:  Should I Stop Nursing if I get Sick?

Lactation Cookies

1 cup butter softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
4 tbsp. water
2 eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
2 cups flour (whole wheat or white)
1 tsp. baking soda
4 tablespoons brewer’s yeast (main ingredient for milk production)
3 cup rolled oats
Optional ingredients (makes them more tasty!):
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup raisins
½ cup chopped nuts (pecans give a good flavor)

Soak flaxseed in water for a few minutes to soften
Mix dry ingredients and set aside:
Cream together butter and sugar, add eggs – one at a time, and then add the flaxseed & vanilla
Slowly add the dry ingredients, then the options
Drop on cookie sheet – bake 8-12 minutes on 375°
