Neighbors,

Before we get too far into April, I hope you'll join me in reviewing what we achieved together in March. It's a long list!

First, a thank you to all of our members, both new and long-time supporters. Each of you is responsible for helping us cross a significant milestone last month, 300 dues-paying Members! Thank you for your trust and support.

Next, thank you to so many of our committee chairs and committee members who completed projects in March. Whether that was a comprehensive plan like our Roadmap to Thriving Small Business Community or getting together members for social events (our 1st Dining Club Event), beautification (Pioneer Park Clean-Up Day) or safety (NERT Emergency Training), each is important to building a stronger North Beach.

We can't wait for wait April has in store.

p.s - We just announced the opening date of the North Beach Farmers Market. See you on April 27th!

A Roadmap to a Thriving Small Business Community
There are many reasons to love North Beach, and amazing small businesses are front and center.

But, we know that our small businesses are hurting right now and it's affecting our entire community. To do our part to help ensure North Beach is a place where businesses have a chance to not only survive but to thrive, we're releasing a set of recommendations that provide a path forward.

Read our Recommendations
We came to these recommendations based on months of research and conversations including conducting a vacancy study, asking residents what businesses they most want to see, learning from other cities and neighborhoods, speaking with current, past, and prospective small business owners, and researching the impact of past legislation.

In the weeks ahead, we'll work with other community organizations, city departments, and officials to make sure they consider our recommendations as we all work to improve the small business climate in our neighborhood.

A special thanks to Sri Artham and many dedicated volunteers in the working group who contributed.

The Results of our 2019 Membership Survey

Results from our 2019 Membership Survey are in! Hear what our members think about changes in quality of life, transit projects, top concerns, and more.

Thank you to all who participated. We had 3x as many participants this year as last. To be invited to the Survey next year, be sure to join as a member.

Uncovering Answers about a Navigation Center in North Beach

In September of 2018, a Navigation Center at the intersection of Bay & Kearny was proposed. Since that time, no significant details emerged, leaving the community with more questions than answers. So, last month, we sent a letter (read here) to the city and elected officials asking for answers on the proposed Navigation Center at Bay & Kearny.

Now, after conversations with the Supervisor's Office and the Department of Homelessness & Supportive Housing, we have an important set of updates to share...

  • The proposed site at Bay & Kearny is no longer being pursued. The site was deemed as too small, with space for just 50 beds. This would have meant costs of $150/bed per night, 3x the cost of a traditional and shelter and 50% higher than other Navigation Centers.
  • For a site in District 3, the ideal site would have 20,000 sq. feet and be available for 4+ years.
  • Along the Embarcadero, South of Market, there are plans for a 200-bed SAFE center. This may be able to accommodate some of the homeless population from our neighborhood.

North Beach Neighbors is committed to continuing to connecting the city to our neighborhood to work together for solutions to homelessness. With firm answers now on the Navigation Center, we will look forward to more viable solutions.

We invite you to be part of this conversation at our April Community Meeting, where our featured speaker will be Jeff Kositsky, the city's director of Homelessness & Supportive Housing. Meeting details at the end of this e-mail.

Hearing from Supervisor Peskin
Thanks to everyone who joined us at our March Community Meeting to hear updates from our featured speaker, Supervisor Peskin.

We covered a wide range of topics and concerns. The most asked questions concentrated on three key areas:

1.) Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety - You asked why there are no protected bike lanes in North Beach, and how a dramatic change can come to our streetscape that puts people and safety first.

2.) Small Business Health - You asked what can be changed to make opening a business easier, and what data backs the proposed vacancy tax.

3.) Homelessness Solutions - You asked why the three previously identified sites were not feasible, and what future plans might look like to support those experiencing homelessness.

Thanks to those who joined and contributed to these important conversations.

Pioneer Park Community Cleanup Day
Thanks to all who joined us at Pioneer Park & Coit Tower for our Community Cleanup Day in March. 3 hours of hard work left the grounds and gardens ready for this beautiful spring weather!

A special thank you to Laura Mancuso for organizing.

Delicious! 1st North Beach Neighbors Dining Club is a Hit.
We had a brilliant time at our inaugural North Beach Neighbors Dining Club event! We were treated to a feast at the new Barbara Pinseria & Cocktail Bar.

Thank you to Peter Kwan for organizing. Be on the lookout for another event this Spring. This is a Members-only event.

NERT Training Finishes

We just finished our 6-week emergency preparedness series with the San Francisco Fire Department and NERT. Nearly 100 neighbors are now ready to assist when emergencies strike in North Beach.

Thanks to everyone who gave your time and care to ensure we are all more prepared! A special thanks to Trish Herman for organizing this effort.
