Mosquito Awareness in Your Community

By: Sherri VanScoit, Marketing, Target Specialty Products

Each year the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) names the last week of the month as National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. This year the week of June 25 – July 1, 2017 served as the week that the AMCA worked to educate the general public about the significance of mosquitoes in their daily lives. But mosquito awareness shouldn’t stop there!

Heat illness can be prevented! As summer heats up ensure you have a plan to keep your employees protected from the heat. Water is key to ensuring they stay hydrated – be sure to provide adequate water, especially during a heat wave, shade and rest are critical so encourage employees to take a break from the sun and rest while they hydrate. Finally, train your employees using this video supplied by the California Dept of Industrial Relations to train on how to prevent and respond to heat illness. Stay safe from the heat this summer!

Service with a smile is an old adage that reigns true in our Blackwood, NJ office.  This team delivered, literally, after hours and on a Friday night to get a customer the right product, in time for an important job. Way to go Blackwood!!

“Gentlemen, I have felt it necessary to email you with an experience that I had last Friday. I had placed an order to be delivered on Friday, earlier in the week. It was a small order, for a specialty job we needed to do for a school district that had ticks at various playgrounds. Treatment had to be done that Sunday. Well, the order did come, but the wrong Nature-cide was shipped. I didn't get back to office until after 5:00 pm & noticed the error, & proceeded to leave a fairly vocal message on the voicemail. Paul Buzby promptly called me back & drove a good 30 miles to my home, on a Friday, to get me the material I needed for Sunday. I felt this was above & beyond the call of duty and I felt you needed to know what great people you have at RESIDEX located in Blackwood. Paul, Peter & Bill, always taking care of my small business needs.  Great job guys.”

Ask the Expert - Question and Answer
Q: How do I tell the difference between Chinch bug damage and drought stress?
A:  Chinch bugs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to suck grass blades, and inject a substance into plants that disrupts water movement in the plant. Early signs of damage are small yellowing areas of lawn. Grass will turn brown and die. Chinch bugs will then move to the outer edges of the dead grass.  This causes the dead areas to expand outwards.

Q: What products and methods yield the best results when treating, ticks and fleas? Also what if there are chickens or other pets in the outdoor area where activity is reported?
A: Your question is timely as experts are predicting high tick and flea populations this year for much of the U.S. Both ticks and fleas can be managed by the use of an insect growth regulator (IGR). IGR’s prevent the development of juvenile pest stages and stops them from becoming reproducing adults. IGR’s vary in the sites they are labeled and can be sensitive to light but not all are labeled for outdoor use. Both Archer and Tekko Pro are photo stable, labeled to be used both indoors and outdoors, and are also labeled for poultry houses and animal quarters – That’s winning!
