World Listening Day 2022

Thank you so much for all the donations you have made so far on this GivingTuesday. This year we were delighted and honored to have Raquel Castro’s poignant theme for World Listening Day 2021, “The Unquiet Earth,” to re-connect us in all that we may hear and know of this mysterious and awesome planet. Please feel free to share this news as we prepare to announce the theme and creator of World Listening Day 2022.

Legacy of R. Murray Schafer

Less than a month after World Listening Day, we were saddened to learn that Raymond Murray Schafer, the “father of Acoustic Ecology” had passed away, at age 88. The date of July 18th was selected for World Listening Day because it was Schafer’s birthday. He died at home on August 14, 2021 after a long and slow decline from Alzheimer’s. His legacy as a Canadian composer, author, music educator is a significant inspiration for the World Listening Project and many around the world.

From the World Listening Day 2021 Archive Live 8:00 PM CDT November 30

To celebrate and honor the legacy of R. Murray Schafer, and to thank all the contributors, radio producers, and participants in World Listening Day 2021, we are releasing today at 8:00 PM CDT the first part of over 14 hours of sound and video, from the World Listening Project’s 24-hours live stream archive

Produced by The World Listening Project in association with WGXC Wave Farm, NAISA Radio, and World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, this collection features soundscape compositions and field recordings by nearly 80 well-known and not-so-well-known creators.

WLP welcomes New Blood

Our Board of Directors consists of esteemed active artists from around the world. Among the WLP's co-founders, the board salutes outgoing President, Board Chair, and co-founder, Chicago based audio artist and teacher, Eric Leonardson, who steps down on December 31, 2021. The World Listening Project’s Board of Directors welcomes new members who will steward our mission into the future. Interested people need not be artists, but rather, have willingness to volunteer for the social good of others and abide by nonprofit best practices.

Please send proposals and queries to or use the web contact form.

What Your Gift Supports

Your support helps in two important ways. Generally, to maintain the costs associated with more accessible communications and digital programs. This allows us to pay teaching artists to more fully engage the public, fostering an interest in and development of practices of listening and field recording. By maintaining a website that serves as the critical point for connecting everybody in the global public, we serve artists, scientists and scholars who produce and communicate and engage us with the diverse and important role of sound with listening. Your support enables the World Listening Project to be more effective at providing an online forum on the uses of radio and web-based technologies, and to support public workshops and lectures, exhibitions, symposiums, and festivals across a variety of digital platforms and physically distant locations.

Specifically, if achieved, our ambitious fundraising goal will enable the World Listening Project to smoothly transition away from our past dependence on all-volunteer operations, toward a more balanced, sustainable, and equitable level of professional management by a paid part-time CEO or Executive Director who manages day-to-day operations, including fundraising and communications aligned with our mission and signature annual event, World Listening Day.
