Neil's News
There's so much good going on at Dixon Hall every day - from fulfilling the basics of food and shelter to the more complex work of community development and neighbourhood empowerment.

I've been touched getting to know the programs of this organization; each one tailored to meet a need in a thoughtful way. I'm also inspired by the team that I get to work with - these women and men are committing themselves to making our City the best that it can be.
In this e-blast you'll enjoy reading about Seniors Month and some of the activities held to celebrate the occasion. As well, you'll read about all the other great accomplishments we've celebrated together over the past month.

I hope you enjoy learning more about this life-changing organization and how Dixon Hall is moving forward to help even more in the community.

Celebrating Seniors
Seniors Services: Celebrating Seniors All Month

June is Seniors Month in Ontario! This year, we’re celebrating the contributions that seniors make every day in their communities.

More than 30% of Canadian seniors are at risk of social isolation, with 19% reporting that they feel a lack of companionship and a sense of isolation from others.

At Dixon Hall, we've been celebrating seniors with lots of fun activities throughout the month, including an Ice Cream Truck Social, a Seniors Month BBQ and a chance to connect with peers at a Seniors Forum.

Toronto Challenge: A Record Breaking Year?

Thank you to everyone who joined our team for the Toronto Challenge on Sunday, June 12 and to those who sponsored our walkers/runners in support of our Seniors programs.

One of our first time racers Jim said,
“It was amazing to see how many dedicated people came out to show their support for seniors’ programs in Toronto. I’m already excited to sign up for next year’s event!"

Final details about the Toronto Challenge coming soon!

Celebrating Success
Volunteers are the Roots of Strong Communities

There's nothing more wonderful than hearing the applause, whistles and cries of "way to go!" when volunteers and staff come together.

At the Show Love Café on Wednesday, June 8, more than 100 guests celebrated the contributions made by our volunteers to the life and work of Dixon Hall every day.

Volunteer Manager Heather Johnson thanked volunteers for over 25,000 hours of time contributed in 2015!

Ada Slaight Music School: When Words Fail, Music Speaks

After 11 years at our Ada Slaight Music School, our violinist and concertmaster Hayley has been accepted to Berklee College of Music and Wilfred Laurier University. Hayley has decided to pursue her dream of becoming a music therapist at Wilfred Laurier University.

We are so proud of Hayley and everything she's accomplished and even more honoured that she now wants to share her love of music with those in need.

Employment Services: We Get People Working

Congratulations to the 11 young professionals who successfully graduated from our Incubator program!

Students of the program received on-the-job training through our Mill Centre (for carpentry/skilled trades) or Show Love Café (food services/hospitality), with many reporting that the small class size and the additional employment support really helped prepare them for a career in the industry.

The next Incubator session starts in September.
