October 2015

Nurture New Nature!

Dear <<Name>>

Autumn is now arriving but there's still plenty going on in the great outdoors (see 'Nature Now') as well as through a host of eco-events. Our special focus is on a free public event to inspire people to create new homes for wildlife: 'Big Nature in the Biosphere' is being held this Saturday 3rd October (1-4 pm) in the Brighton Centre foyer.

Our event will showcase a wide range of practical ideas of how to create new nature habitats in a fun and interactive way for people of all ages, from growing wild flowers in your window box to making a green roof on your shed.

Our local wildlife needs our help now more than ever, with a call for each of us to make a little space for the wild on our lives and outside spaces by Biosphere partner 'Big Nature' in this month's Bio Blog (below right) by guest contributor Rob Sandercock.

Big Nature are the sponsors for a new Nature category as part of the PEA Awards - People, Environment, Achievement - that will follow our event on Saturday evening, at which the people who represent trailblazers for eco-action in the UK and beyond will be recognised. Check the blog to find out who has been shortlisted under this year's Nature heroes contest!

Our Biosphere area hosts some pioneering initiatives to create new habitats for wildlife (see 'WoW' section, below left).

A new exhibition 'Re-Discover' at the ONCA gallery in Brighton challenges us to consider how the green spaces of 'Valley Gardens' in the heart of Brighton could be "re-wilded" for nature and people. Do pay it a visit
over the next fortnight and prepare to be amazed!

Meanwhile in Lewes District , a suite of new videos have been produced to promote the wonderful local nature reserves managed by the council's ranger team around Lewes and Newhaven - don't miss out on these!

Also in Lewes, our Biosphere is part of a new UNESCO-inspired festival Lewes Light on the weekend of 16-17th October in which buildings and outdoor spaces will be presented "in a new light", alongside an exhibition and speakers programme at the Linklater Pavilion.

Wishing you an active and illuminating October,

New Wild Spaces

A number of pioneering and exemplary new wildlife habitats have been created in our Biosphere area which can be appreciated by people, including:

~ Brighthelm Gardens, Brighton (above)  chalk 'butterfly bank' with local wildflowers - the South Downs in miniature!

~ Butterfly Haven, Brighton - the original inspiration for butterfly banks, part of Dorothy Stringer school grounds in Surenden

~ Big Park, Peacehaven - new woodland and open habitats established through community

Make Space for Nature in Your Life!

Nature provides us humans with much pleasure, as well as a host of valuable but often invisible services such as water purification and pollination, but wildlife is in decline almost everywhere hence we are in danger of these services being lost.

Each of us can play a role in addressing this, which is the focus of our organisation Big Nature: we aim to inspire a renaissance in the relationship between ourselves and local wildlife.

Our goal is to promote “bio-empathy” – an individual’s emotional connection with the natural world – so that we may all learn the true value of our natural heritage.

We encourage everyone to put a little bit of the wild back – by creating suitable homes for wildlife… read full blog
