Week In Pictures
Featured Farmer

Plant it Forward

Our featured vendor this week is Plant it Forward.  This farming co-op is still up and running post-Harvey, but they need help clearing some of their fields from debris so they can resume planting.  If you can assist with this effort, please  call:  713-432-0754.

Houston is settling a record number of new refugees every year. Most have spent years in refugee camps outside of their own countries living in extreme conditions while waiting to realize the American dream. Once here they are faced with huge challenges assimilating into their new homeland as few have the language or job skills to find meaningful work. Some of these refugees come from agrarian backgrounds and they know how to raise quality food but there is not a single classified job posting for an experienced farmer.

Plant It Forward Farms brings together the people and resources needed to make that vision a reality. We partner with social and religious groups to provide land and tools to refugees who settle in Houston with few other skills besides farming. Refugees receive training at a model farm, as well as additional business assistance to help sell their produce through farmers markets, farm stands, farm shares and restaurant sales. A portion of each success helps provide opportunities for future refugees, and our replicable model can easily be scaled to support hundreds of urban farms throughout the city and beyond. Through Plant It Forward Farms, refugees can become active and contributing citizens that help Houston realize its potential as a leader in sustainable living.

Plant it Forward produce is available every Saturday at Farmers Market at Imperial.  For those that want a weekly box of produce already packed, Plant it Forward offers the convenience of a farm share program available for pick up at Imperial Farmers Market.

Imperial Barbeque

Imperial BBQ has been busy with competitions this summer, but we are glad to welcome them back to their home at Farmers Market at Imperial this Saturday.

If you’re looking for authentic Texas barbeque, you’ve come to the right place. At Imperial Barbeque they’ll give you the attention and personal service you’ll come to expect and enjoy.  At Imperial Barbeque it all starts with the wood they use and their delicious homemade barbecue sauce.  Imperial BBQ personally hand cuts, split all the oak and pecan wood that we use to smoke our meats.  Their dry rubs have evolved through the years with successfully competing in cook-offs since 1994 and many long hours of practice to give you the flavor that everyone enjoys. They offer traditional 100% smoked Texas barbeque that is prepared with hard work and personal pride.  These are very important components when cooking Texas barbeque!

Imperial Barbeque is a famliy owned and operated mobile catering service that is located in Sugar Land Texas. Let them put their experience to work for you.
Guest Musician:

Umbria in
Sugar Land

September 27 - October 1
The City of Sugar Land is hosting a multi-day film festival called Umbria in Sugar Land at locations throughout Sugar Land. The festival is an international project produced by the International Film Festival of Spello, also known as Festival del Cinema Città di Spello ed i Borghi Umbri. The sixth edition of the festival was presented at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival in September 2016.

The film festival features both Italian and European films at historic Sugar Land Auditorium, a public screening of a film in Sugar Land Town Square, and additional cultural events and seminars. It is a festival dedicated to the promotion of cinematographic culture and the Umbrian region’s contributions to art, culture, food, wine and craftsmanship. Umbria in Sugar Land is a way for Sugar Land, Fort Bend County and the surrounding Houston region to enjoy the region of Umbria’s culture, while promoting local tourism and economic activity.

This project is a partnership with the City of Sugar Land, the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, the Festival del Cinema Città di Spello ed I Borghi Umbri, the Region of Umbria, and the City of Spello
