When is a tomato not just another tomato? When it is available for purchase fresh from the field at a neighborhood farmers market. Residents of Sugar Land and beyond can enjoy the freshest-tasting produce, view one-a-kind arts and crafts and interesting artisan finds at the Farmers Market at Imperial, located at Highway 90 at Brooks Street (198 Kempner St in Sugar Land). Presented by the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, each Farmers Market at Imperial will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine, year round. Click here for more information!

Texas Pickle Company

We are Tom and Jessica Weldin, owners and operators of Texas Pickle Company, LLC, in Sugar Land, Texas. We are proud to announce our status as Finalists in the HEB Quest for Texas Best Competition! Together with our two children, we moved to Texas from California in 2013. We loved visiting farmers markets and were looking for the perfect pickles.  We also tried to find them in store bought versions, but still with no success. We love to cook so it was obvious that we needed to learn how to make them ourselves. After reading a canning & pickling book (from Lowes!), we produced a jar of habanero dill pickles, left them out for friends and family to try, and the response was overwhelming! We only had to hear ‘best pickles I’ve ever had in my life’ a few times before realizing that maybe we had something special. We knew that starting a small business would be a fun family adventure and would teach our young children about farming, community, and bringing a product to market.

Very early on, we decided we wanted to work with and support our local farmers. Having been brought up with little exposure to the sources of the food we ate, it was very important for us to make sure our children fully understood where their food came from, and to understand the importance of the farmer in their daily lives.  We’ve been selling at the Imperial Farmers markets since January of 2015 and the local response has been fantastic! Please stop by and say hi!

Is Saturday your free day?  Delicious homemade delights by Chef Susan.  Breakfast tacos, cinnamon rolls, and various cakes and cookies.  While you are there, check out her take home items like fresh baked pies and perfectly seasoned soups.
Did You Know?

As we enter summertime, it's time to take a look at that summer bucket list.  What are your weekend adventures?  Are you ready to enjoy lots of sunshine?  This weekend, you can do both at Farmers Market at Imperial!
If you are feeling adventurous, try something new.  The market has a great combination of old favorites, plus a selection of unique items that won't be found at your local grocery store.  Have you ever eaten a jujube?  (It is a Chinese Apple/date.)  Have you ever cooked with lavender?  How about eating a duck egg in lieu of a chicken egg?   There's always something new and different at the market! 
Come for the adventure but stay for the atmosphere.  This weekend, we have guest musician Steve Lam visiting.  Enjoy your Saturday at Famers Market at Imperial.

Texas Vegetable Salad with
Herb Dijon Vinaigrette
When shopping for ingredients, consider your local farmers market vendors for good pork, shrimp, eggs, chicken and a range of fresh produce! 
Ingredients for Herb Dijon Vinaigrette
  • ¼ Cup Tarragon wine vinegar
  • ¼ Cup Wholegrain Dijon mustard
  • 2 T. Texas honey
  • 2 Small Shallots, finely minced
  • ¾ Cup Light Texas olive oil
  • 3 T. Minced mixed fresh Texas herbs  (parsley, tarragon, thyme, basil or dill)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Ingredients for Salad
  • 5 Cups Mixed spring greens
  • 1 Cup Shredded Texas cabbage
  • ½ Cup Halved grape tomatoes
  • 2 Medium Beets, roasted, peeled, and cut into wedges
  • 1 Cup Texas broccoli florets, cooked tender-crisp
  • 3 Texas baby yellow squash, cooked tender-crisp and halved
  • 4 Ounces Baby carrots, cooked tender-crisp, and halved
  • 4 Ounces Texas small whole green beans, cooked tender-crisp
  • 4 Ounces Crumbled goat cheese or feta
To Prepare

To prepare Vinaigrette: In the bowl of a food processor, combine vinegar, mustard, honey and shallots. Process until smooth. With the machine running, add light Texas olive oil in a slow, steady stream. Transfer to a bowl, stir in fresh herbs, and salt and pepper to taste. Chill until serving time 

To prepare Salad: Toss the salad greens and cabbage with enough dressing to coat. Top with the vegetables, lightly drizzle with a bit more vinaigrette, then top with cheese. Serve at once.

Variation: Use a variety of vegetables – cooked baby new potatoes, steamed Texas zucchini, tender-crisp asparagus, blanched sugar snap peas. Use any vegetables in season.
