Blackwatch '68 Inspirations

Hi Blackwatch ’68 Friends!

Its so nice to see the flowers start to pop up after a cold winter! We wanted to reach out and say hello and give you a few updates:

First off a big thank you to each of you for helping pass along the nice words about our company. This word of mouth campaign is very helpful in moving our boutique brand out to the market and helping people find us! Our website inquiries have increased each month and this is a culmination of our marketing to be sure but it is also from you!

We often get the question, what is the story behind the name of the company?

Blackwatch is a classic plaid often associated with a prep school uniform (think “Dead Poets Society”) but it is also an Irish tartan centuries old. “1968” was a watershed year in the tumultuous 1960s and it was also the year I was born. Blackwatch ’68, before it was our development company was actually the name of our vintage furniture store that I ran out of my condo until we found a storefront. While real estate and furniture restoration are totally distinct in our case they represented a shared passion for vintage restoration and an underlying path towards sustainability. I was looking into getting a LEED certification one day and a college friend said, why do you need that, what could be more green and sustainable than restoring a 100 year old building or giving new life to an old 60’s sofa redone with a 40’s University of Wisconsin wool college blanket! Sorry for the tangent, but that is the story behind the name.

Cut to today, our vision is a collection of diverse properties in cool neighborhoods that are steps to green spaces, with a development focus on character vintage properties that we can transform into fresh modern spaces! Our philosophy has always been that where you live should allow for self expression and be an extension of who you are.

Blackwatch '68 : 2211 North Avenue, Chicago IL

4.

Foodies have been buzzing about who is opening up shop in our Bucktown 2211 North building (formerly Birchwood) and you can finally check it out this month in person! Read these exciting articles–Chicago Magazine, DNA Info, Chicago Eater–that give you a sneak peak at Chris and Nancy’s new fabulous restaurant. What a team they are! Nancy came from Trotters & Blackbird and Chris owns The Winchester (one of my personal favs). Can’t wait for this to open!
Blackwatch '68 : 330 Cedar

5.

Yup, we have begun doing single family home renovations, with our first in Highland Park just steps from the Ravinia Festival. This midcentury ravine home sits around the corner from the Ferris Bueller home (remember the car in the glass garage?), and around the corner from the Risky Business and Ordinary People homes too! (yes they were all filmed right here). And aren't we lucky to have Richard/Nancy Becker to assist with the new facade design!

For more about HPk summer events, check out this recent article in Chicago Magazine!
Blackwatch '68 Waterpower District

We are slowly expanding our collection of properties in the Historic Watertower District (Terrace, Wahl, Woodstock), as we are finding that professionals and empty nesters alike treasure this small pocket where you can jog thru Back Bay Park/Lake Park, pop over to Villa Terrace, stroll to Whole Foods, all while being surrounded by buildings designed by some of the finest architects of the day!

Speaking of Wicker Park, we are so proud of Sprout, our tenant at 1943 W. Division.
