CUPE Local 2049 on strike
This is an appeal for financial and material support on behalf of a determined and committed group of workers, the locked-out members of CUPE Local 2049.

On December 23, the Nipissing and Parry Sound Children’s Aid Society (CAS) locked out its 140 Northern workers and suspended all Youth Justice Services and Early Intervention programs. The agency has children and families relying on scabs for reduced services, while forcing its trained and experienced workers to walk the picket line; and of course, the longer the lockout goes on, the greater the risk to the vulnerable children, youth and families in the CAS’s care.
It was a holiday drama in those few days before Christmas, with the employer of Nipissing and Parry Sound CAS locking out its employees and acting like a relentless Scrooge and heartless Grinch.

The workers, members of CUPE Local 2049, rejected the employers’ final offer by 96% on December 13 because it did not address workload concerns, among other issues.  Between that date and the deadline, the Local wanted to continue bargaining toward a fair contract. During that time, the CAS merely re-tabled the same rejected offer while preparing a “contingency plan” that included the lockout and scab labour.

The locked-out workers are receiving active solidarity from union locals inside and outside of CUPE, the local Labour Council, and CUPE leadership.

As we are approaching the 4th week of lockout, we are seeking your support for these Sisters’ and Brothers’ struggle. You can help by visiting them on their picket lines. They picket every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 471 Main Street West in North Bay and at 25 Church St. in Parry Sound (contact Debbie Hill at 705-358-5887 for more information).

Your Locals’ donation to the strike fund for CUPE Local 2049 would also be very welcome; their spirits are high, but coming up to four weeks on the picket line is stressful for these members.
If your Local is sending a donation, please make the cheque payable to
“CUPE Local 2049 Strike Fund” and mail to:
