While we were all busy with reacting to the tragic mass killing of more than 1,400 Atlantic white-sided dolphins in the Faroe Islands on September 12th, just ten days later, another drive hunt – called “grindadráp” – took place on the Faroe Islands. 52 pilot whales were killed.

This killing of pilot whales (which – despite their name - belong to the dolphin family too) happened just a few days after the Faroese Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen has made a public statement, announcing to start an evaluation into the hunt of the Atlantic white-sided dolphins. At the same time, he alleged that these hunts are considered ‘sustainable’. The hunt of pilot whales is thereby not part of the scrutiny as he hinted to a difference – from a cultural perspective – between hunting pilot whales and hunting of other dolphins.

OceanCare does not believe that this recent statement is reasonable or appropriate. It is not sufficient to restrict the evaluation to the hunt of Atlantic white-sided dolphins, but the whole practice of hunting whales and dolphins must be subject to scrutiny. The continued practice of hunting these highly evolved marine mammals, on top of it without a catch quota, cannot be accepted. These hunts undermine efforts to protect these slowly reproducing animals that are exposed to numerous threats in the ocean which already make it hard for them to survive.
Since 12th September, we have been working tirelessly on our policy outreach to increase the pressure:
  • We reached out to the EU-Commission and numerous governments within the European Union and beyond. We expect them to get active bilaterally as well as jointly towards the Danish Kingdom.
  • We wrote to the governments of Denmark and the Faroe Island with our call for an end of the whale and dolphin hunts.
  • We are in direct contact with decision makers, asking them to add their voice to that of other world leaders asking for this cruel and unnecessary activity to end.
  • We are coordinating longer-term responses with NGO colleagues all over the world.
Our aim is clear – the hunts need to end.
There is no time to rest. And we need to YOU to help dolphins in the Atlantic. Please share the petition with your friends and colleagues and call on them to help end the drive hunts in the Faroe Islands.
Many thanks for your support and with best wishes,

Fabienne McLellan
