Got Connections? We’ve Got Categories Seeking Sponsors!

New for the 2017 fair, LRSEF is now seeking category sponsors to offset the cost of students’ first, second, and third place awards. Junior awards cost $135 per category, and Senior awards run $180 per category. With 22 categories and two divisions, we are looking to recoup almost $7,000 in funding to keep these student awards from being paid out of our general event budget. In recognition for their tax-deductible contributions, category sponsors will be recognized in the LRSEF program, on event signage, and on the students’ certificates.
As of the date of this newsletter, we have already locked down four of our category sponsors, leaving just 40 more to go! At this time, we are especially interested in connecting with medical / healthcare firms (6 relevant categories x 2 divisions = 12 sponsors needed) and IT / computing firms (that’s another 6 categories x 2 divisions = another 12 sponsors needed there). If you know of a company who would like to sponsor a category, especially in medicine or information systems, please contact LRSEF Board member Corinne Greenberg at
In addition to category awards, LRSEF student scientists claim Special Awards with monetary values ranging from $25 each to upwards of $100. Last year, 45 high school exhibitors and 34 junior high exhibitors claimed $5,415 in Special Award stipends. To sponsor a Special Award, contact Board member Terry Roach at

Welcome to the Fair!

We would like to welcome the following schools to the fair this year: Ballard High School, Barret Traditional Middle School, Brown School, JCPS, Kentucky Country Day, Newburg Middle School, Sacred Heart Academy, South Oldham Middle School, St. Xavier, and Valley High School.

LRSEF has a great partnership with GE Appliances, a Haier Company, in supporting STEM activities for our region.

Recently, the great GE volunteers honored LRSEF with four major donations and will continue as our 2017 title sponsor! The outcome of the Challenge Fund for Mike Ekbundit’s 100 Mile Race in April attracted a total of 17 donors, with many gifts being matched by GE Foundation. Thanks to Mike and his brave day at the race, LRSEF has $2,140 to give away to students and teachers in the upcoming regional science & engineering fair. The second great effort by the 130-member Asian Pacific American Forum (APAF) at GE Appliances was the annual fundraiser in honor of the Diwali, festival of light. This event was held in mid-November and netted $2,500 toward LRSEF 2017! LRSEF also is receiving GE United Way gifts from individuals and so far this year, $592.81 has been donated to sponsor LRSEF. And breaking news, just as the Newsletter goes to print, the corporate contribution from GE Appliances, a Haier Company for LRSEF 2017 has increased to $7,500.
LRSEF thanks the great folks at GE Appliances, a Haier company, for your volunteer service (over 400 hours), your mentoring & outreach and for your great fundraising efforts. We are delighted to share this wealth with Kentucky’s STEM students and honored to continue to award our fourth year of the BEST OF FAIR awards & trophies sponsored by a special GE Innovation Fund, established in 2014.
