MADE IN MAYFLOWER
Made In Mayflower | Early Years | 'Together We Can...'

The best way to help children aged 4 to 7 learn is to:

  • sit with them as they work
  • do active and practical things, rather than trying to make them sit and listen for long periods
  • try to break down the work into shorter periods, based on how long they can concentrate
  • take frequent breaks
  • praise or reward them when they do well

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT enables Mayflower to promote community learning. Families sign up to this ethos to create a culture of excellence for all.
We have created a short parent support video about Tapestry.
This short video explores:

How do I activate my Tapestry account?
How do I login to Tapestry?
How do I view a Tapestry post?
How do I interact with a Tapestry post?
How do I share my own Tapestry post?

Step up

ATTENDANCE for all is a must. Pupils who are on time and are fully engaged, make more progress. They go on to have better life choices. Step up to the mark.
Here are some super parent examples of how you can share your remote learning with us on Tapestry.
Engage

ENGAGING IN NEW EXPERIENCES
enables pupils and their families to create a fresh sense of perspective whilst developing their talents and interests.
'Free play' is an important part of the early years curriculum and a crucial ingredient to your child's development. You will notice that we have included 'free play' sessions as part of your remote learning curriculum (see timetable).

We are following our key worker bubbles interests and sharing some of these as additional optional challenges for you to explore at home, such as flying a kite and learning all about space.
"Play is the highest form of research." Albert Einstein

Reducing screen time

Digital devices are not the only way to learn. Manage screen time with a timer and break up screen time by getting your child to:

  • use books and other materials that their school has provided or that you have at home e.g. paper

  • write by hand – try asking them to complete work by hand

  • be active and get away from the screen regularly

  • stop using digital devices at least an hour before bed

Focus

ATTENTION and focus are key learning behaviours that pupils are taught. Pupils learn how to organise their ideas, accelerate progress and achieve the highest standards.
Mayflower Reception have prepared some pre-recorded phonics sessions introducing how we teach each grapheme and digraph in class.

Speech and language is an important part of child development. We teach how each sound is pronounced through 'cued articulation', along with each Jolly Phonics action and song.
Some of the Mayflower Reception challenges will refer to a 'steps to success pencil.'

Each image on the pencil represents a different step...

1. Can you find the letter on the alphabet mat independently? Can you copy cat (trace) it?
2. Can you write on the line, writing from left to right?
3. Can you use a capital letter, finger spaces (in between each word) and a full stop?
4. Can you form your letters using pre-cursive formation independently?
5. Can you use your high frequency word mat to spell these words correctly? E.g. the, and

We use this pencil every time we model writing a sentence or caption in class and when we mark the children’s learning with them. We tick the things that have made us proud and set them a challenge around their next step.

E.g. “I am proud that you have used your alphabet mat to help you today. Can you show me where the capital letter and full stop should go?"

Whilst in school, our children are familiar with using a variety of manipulatives during their maths challenges. This film shows you how to use pasta, eggs, socks and Jaffa Cakes to support learning instead of printing or buying new resources.
The Mayflower Book Shop is still open for you to purchase helpful learning resources e.g. whiteboards, pens, number lines etc.

Please contact school.office@mayfloweracademy.co.uk to place an order.
Empower

DEVELOPING the talents and interests of our pupils and their families sits at the heart of our ‘Together we can…’ ethos. Empowerment fuels improvement for all.
Together we can... empower other families to learn in new ways.
"Our children are finding being away from people quite hard and they really miss their friends. Can you please help us connect?"
