Manitoba Music Rocks Charity Bonspiel has raised
over $14,500 for Unison Benevolent Fund

Manitoba’s music community rocked the house for charity this month. Over 140 curlers joined event organizers Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film & Music for the fourth annual Manitoba Music Rocks Charity Bonspiel at the Granite Curling Club. This year's event raised over $4,500, taking the bonspiel's total donation to over $14,500.
“Once again the Manitoba music community has shown its generous spirit in its support of the Unison Benevolent Fund,” said Manitoba Music's executive director, Sara Stasiuk, who also sits on the Unison Benevolent Fund Board of Directors. “We're proud to be able to do our part to help the Unison Benevolent Fund reach its fundraising goal."

We would like to thank all of our generous sponsors, particularly this year's bonspiel sponsor, Asham, as well as Breakfast Television Winnipeg, Half Prints Brewing Co., SOCAN, The Forks, Special T Shirt Company, BreakOut West, Fairmont Winnipeg, Guppy Graphic Design, Long & McQuade, and Payworks. Their ongoing support is what makes fundraising events like the Manitoba Music Rocks Charity Bonspiel so successful.
The Bonspiel itself drew some familiar faces from the music world, including The Weakerthans' Stephen Carroll, Imaginary Cities’ Rusty MatyasOh My Darling’s Vanessa Kuzina; representatives from Winnipeg’s live music scene, including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Festival du Voyageur, West End Cultural Centre, Casinos of Winnipeg, and Big Fun Festival; among many others.

Toronto is getting a dose of Nashville these days with the Wednesday Night Music Club. Inspired by traditional Nashville style songwriter rounds like those that happen at the famed, Bluebird Café, these quarterly evenings at The Cadillac Lounge are a great time to hear some established country music writers right in the heart of the city. Past rounds have seen great crowd support and have included writers such as: Steve Rivers, Karen Kosowski, Andrea England, and Carli and Julie Kennedy. Each night includes one feature writer and most recently hosted Thomas Wade, who penned the hit "Lying Here With You", one of many songs that earned him three Juno nominations and seven CCMA awards.

Along with putting on a great show, the Wednesday Night Music Club has teamed up with Unison Fund to help raise support for their cause. Over the past two shows, over $500 has been raised to help musicians who have fallen on hard times.

The next Wednesday Night Music Club is happening on Wednesday, May 14th at The Cadillac Lounge in Toronto at 8pm and includes Grammy Award nominated writer, Steve Wilkinson from the The Wilkinsons. For more information go to

March 26th, 2013 was the date of the last gig Jay Smith – solo artist and guitarist in the Matt Mays Band – ever played.

A year has passed but Jay’s memory is still strong in all who knew him and to mark this anniversary, a benefit for the Unison Benevolent Fund was held at The Carleton Music Bar & Grill in Halifax on March 27th. The evening featured a video of some of Jay’s performances and the music of Jay Smith performed by the friends of Jay Smith.

Unison is honoured to have been a part of this benefit, and is grateful to all the friends of Jay’s who made the night such a success! If you weren’t able to attend the benefit and want to support Unison in honour of Jay, please donate here.
