ÉQUIPE-CHOC ENGLISH COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

December 2021
Dear Colleagues,

Several people are completely burnt out by the end of the holiday season because they haven't taken the time to focus on their own needs. No one likes starting a new year with an empty emotional tank. Since the holidays can have a pressure-cooker-effect on us, it’s important to include time for self-care during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. The trick is to plan before you’re in the thick of it. But how does one practice self-care within a completely packed schedule ?

One of the biggest pitfalls of the holidays is trying to micromanage every single task and event in our calendar. It’s one thing to be in control, but tackling too much at once can leave us feeling overwhelmed.

How about creating personal rituals ?  Many of us are creatures of habit, so when the holidays throw off our groove, we must do something to get back to a sense of calm. Here’s my best practice : I light one of my favourite holiday-scented candles, put on a festive playlist and look for the ONE (yep, just one) new recipe to absolutely put on the menu this year.

Another tip is to watch your words. According to experts, when we are overstressed, it’s a natural inclination to use negative language to describe the things that are going on. Trying to mindfully use positive words can therefore significantly reduce stress.

Put yourself on the schedule. If there are (hopefully a few) empty spots on your calendar, fill them in with me-time : go for a walk, read a good book, or watch your favourite holiday movie. Planning for your needs and scheduling times for self-care shows strong emotional intelligence, which can help get you through busy times without crashing and burning.

Be mindful of your emotions. We all know that the holidays can be a time of intense highs and lows. Stress and joy alike can trigger powerful, harder-to-manage emotions. In order for them to comfortably sit side by side, it is especially important to assess how you are feeling, so you can better handle the energy that they bring. Remember that rest time is not misspent time; it is a thoughtful moment meant to restore energy, to replenish your strength.

Sending you our warmest wishes, we hope that the end of 2021 will be cheerful and make way for a fresh and bright New Year.
Happy Holidays!

FNM: Strategies for Reading Mathematical Statements

In this workshop, we will share the results of our research and our reflections on the challenges encountered in Mathematics concerning reading.
  • By identifying common errors and challenges on how to adapt complex tasks to the specific needs of students;
  • By consolidating grammatical and lexical elements;
  • By consolidating strategies for representing the problem;
  • By organizing the points that make up a complex task.
In other words, we will be able to demystify linguistic obstacles in Mathematics.
