February 2021
Dear colleagues,

I hope that you and your families are all safe and well! During a recent conversation about the importance of self-care with my dear colleague Giovanna, she brought a Derek Walcot poem to my attention. I wanted to share it with all of you.

Wikipedia states that Derek Walcot (1930-2017) was a West Indian poet and dramatist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1992. His work focused on the conflict between European and West Indian culture and the journey from slavery to independence. The poem that I have chosen to highlight is entitled: Love after Love

Love After Love

The time will come

when, with elation

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your own mirror

and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was yourself.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

It's a reminder that our first and greatest love affair should be with ourselves. With Valentine's Day coming, and the pandemic still on our heels, the words of Mr. Walcott seem to make everything make sense. I encourage you all to feast on your life.
