San Gabriel Mountains National Monument

July Update

We hope you are enjoying your summer. There has been much going on with the Community Collaborative and Monument Fund. Read on for the latest update.
The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Fund is also on a roll, with only 1% to go toward our current goal of $3 million. Our Corporate partners, including recent contributions from the Walt Disney Company, have been stepping up to ensure we can improve habitat and increase local supplies of water. Over the next few months we will continue our work with the Forest Service and the San Gabriel Community Collaborative to determine the other future projects that will be the focus of the funds. We know the list of potential projects and the need for funding is large, so we will continue to seek funding to support the projects we all want to see in the new Monument. After convening several meetings during the Need to Change Analysis comment period, the Community Collaborative hopes to reach consensus soon on comments and recommendations. The Collaborative, made up of members representing diverse interests (including academic, business, community, conservancies, environmental, environmental and health justice, education, youth, local government, Native American, public safety, recreation, special use permit holders, transportation, utilities, water rights holders, and more), is working hard to finalize comments that various constituents and communities will be able to support. The task is no small feat! The Angeles National Forest, in recognition of the hard work by the Community Collaborative and many citizens and groups to engage in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument planning process, decided to extend the initial public comment period until August 11, 2015. Comments can be submitted through email at: or mailed to Angeles National Forest, ATTN: Justin Seastrand, 701 North Santa Anita Avenue, Arcadia, CA 91006.
