The Lion and the Mouse from The Classic Treasury of Aesop's Fables

A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws. A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose. Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.

"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse. "Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."

The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.

Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net. Running to one of the great ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.

"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse. "Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion."
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

The story of our Aesop's Fable

Everyone has been asking, "Why a Bookstore?, "Why now?" Here's some insight into what prompted us to open Aesop's Fable, an independent book shop, at a time when online retailers and e-readers should have stopped us in our tracks.

After more than 20 years working in the corporate world, followed by a year of loss, deep reflection, and self discovery, I came to the profound realization that there is much more I want to do, see, experience, learn and share.  This has pushed me to follow my dream of opening a brick and mortar book shop in the cozy town of Holliston, Massachusetts.

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. - Aesop

That simple quote from Aesop sums up a lot of what gave me the confidence to take this giant leap forward. Over the last year, it has been the little things that have stood out and made me pause to reassess my path.  For the first time in a very long time, I was able to slow down enough to observe what was happening all around me and appreciate life's little gifts. To look long enough to see. To listen long enough to hear. To stop long enough to think. To be honest enough to feel.

Helping someone reach the item off the top shelf at the market. Ushering the person in line next to you to go ahead when you see they were waiting longer. Getting up on a plane and helping someone with their luggage. Standing up for someone being pushed around by a bully. Neighbors helping neighbors.  A smile in return for a smile to a passing stranger. Simple little things that bring more happiness to the world, one gesture at a time.

Aesop is one of the greatest thinkers, orators, writers in history. His words ring as true today as when he first etched them and provide much of the inspiration for our journey. The written word and the books that hold knowledge, struggles, accomplishments, pleasure and despair, open the doors to the world of imagination and build empathy and understanding.

Our mission at Aesop's Fable is to provide high quality, well crafted books, toys and games for curious minds of all ages. We hope to inspire others to slow down in this fast paced world. To smile. To feel. To put yourself in someone else's shoes. To make a difference one small gesture at a time.

We hope to help you spark the flame of imagination, introduce you to worlds you have yet to discover and help you fulfill the cravings for the loves and passions you already have. We invite you to join us on this journey!
