The power of simple practices.

In these late days of Winter, feeling like my life is particularly layered and pressured, I keep returning to the most simple of practices.  These practices feel like the antidote to the modern world ‘pressure cooker’.  I was driving home from the grocery story this morning - feeling the day to day hustle of raising 2 young children, being passionate about my day job, and managing the business of yoga - practicing double-breathing (explained below) and I could feel some of the strain in my mind dissolve.  These simple practices, that shift us towards the beauty of presence, are the practices I am so inspired by these days.  I hope they may also support you in your unfolding.

In this newsletter you will also find more information about my upcoming fundraiser for the Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society on International Women’s day, coming up in less than a week, and my silent Spring retreat for women.  Also, I have launched my new website, and I would love your feedback, on it and/or this newsletter www.andreasentesy.com.  At the end of this newsletter I share a land acknowledgement I recently wrote in an Indigenous Allyship training.  I strive to stand beside the First People of this land as an ally, with humility in my heart - and to serve in creating right-relationship.

I look forward to sharing space, and a simple smile or deep breath with you when our paths cross next.

May you all enjoy these brightening days,

xo andrea

PS - If you’re new to my newsletter, a reminder that: the intent of this newsletter is to share, from my heart, some yogic ponderings and practices that currently inspire and uplift me, as well as to keep you all in the loop on my upcoming yoga offerings (drop-in classes in Squamish, workshops and series in the Sea to Sky Corridor and retreat weekends).  My intention is NOT to send you an email you are not interested in receiving - so, please click unsubscribe at the bottom of this email if that’s you and I will not take it personally.  I will send no more than a handful a year ;)

Double Breathing
Sit upright with a tall spine, or lie down - make sure your body is comfortable.  Scan your body and soften into any areas of tension.  Bring your awareness to the cadence of your breath.  Place one hand on your belly and one hand on your heart.  Relax your shoulders, neck and jaw.
As you inhale, breathe into your belly, and then your upper chest.  As you exhale, release your upper chest and then your belly.  Inhale, belly fills and then heart lifts.  Exhale, chest relaxes and then belly moves back towards the spine.  Take 10 deep breaths in this way, gently blink your eyes open and notice what you notice.  (If you’re driving, keep your hands on the steering wheel ;)

You are invited to join Amber GouldAndrea Sentesy to celebrate the courage and resilience of Women. You will be guided through gentle and intentional yoga, a red thread talking circle, story-telling and Kirtan, all devoted to the Divine Feminine.

On International Women's Day: Friday March 8th, 2019 6:30-8:30pm at the Yoga Studio Squamish (37776 2nd Ave, downtown Squamish). Following the event please join us for appies, graciously donated by Northyards Cider Co. to keep the conversation going (if you are on foot, we will help you find a ride).

Suggested donation of $25 (please contact us if finances are a barrier). All funds raised will be in support of the Howe Sound Women's Centre.  Pre-registration is required - by replying to this newsletter, or here.

Spring

Somewhere
a black bear
has risen from sleep
and is staring

down the mountain.
All night
in the brisk and shallow restlessness
of early spring

I think of her,
her four black fists
flicking the gravel,
her tongue

like a red fire
touching the grass,
the cold water.
There is only one question:

how to love this world.
I think of her,
rising
like a black and leafy ledge

to sharpen her claws against
the silence
of the trees.
Whatever else

my life is
with its poems
and its music
and its glass cities,

it is also this dazzling darkness
coming
down the mountain,
breathing and tasting;

all day I think of her -
her white teeth,
her wordlessness,
her perfect love.

Mary Oliver
My name is Andrea.  Like many of you, I am a guest here.  My ancestors are from Hungary, Germany and Britain.  I would like to honour the existence of the First Peoples of the land I currently call home.  I would like to humbly acknowledge that I teach yoga on the unceded, Indigenous land of the Skwxwu7mesh Peoples, in the place that is now known as Squamish.  I was born on the Indigenous land of the Algonquin and Iroquois Peoples, in the place now known as Perth, Ontario.

As an uninvited guest here, I want to say thank you, and bow deeply to the First Peoples for their guardianship and care taking of this Land.  For giving our first Mother a voice and for standing up for her since the beginning of time.  And, I promise that I will raise children that know the Truth of our collective past.  I honour the land that I live, play and prosper on.  My heart gives thanks for Stawamus Chief, Stawamus River, grandmother Cedar, the eagles and the orcas.  Hiyaya (victory of the heart).
