4th of July Special Edition:

In this special holiday edition, we've got you covered! We will explain the importance of sunscreen, how to care for that inevitable sunburn, waxing for swimsuit season, hair care for the pool, yummy drink recipes, even a fun, festive activity for the kids. We have all the information you will need to ensure a fun and safe 4th of July celebration!

First things first:
Importance of Sunscreen:

      While a lot of us love spending time at the beach and how we look with a nice tan, there are serious consequences when we get too much sun exposure. Overexposure to the sun can cause sunburn, premature aging of the skin, wrinkling, and skin cancer. It is important to know what kind of sunscreen to use, the proper SPF amount for your skin type and how often to apply it to prevent these permanent damages to your skin.

What to look for in purchasing a sunscreen--
  • Look for a water-proof brand if you are swimming or sweating (**Note that water-proof brands are not always completely water-proof & will need to be applied even after getting out of the water).
  • Choose a water-based sunscreen if your skin is sensitive
  • Be aware of the expiration date. Some ingredients might degrade over time.
  • Not all sunscreens contain the same chemicals, so if your skin reacts to one brand, try another!
  • Pick a broad-spectrum that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays and one that has an SPF of at least 15.

When to apply sunscreen--
  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. This will give it time to absorb into the skin and be less likely to wash off if you were to sweat.
  • Remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming or perspiring
  • Apply sunscreen often throughout the day to ensure your skin's safety

The Right SPF for Your Skin Type

How to Relieve a Sunburn:

Summer's in full swing, but with that comes one inevitable thing: sunburn. Among all those hours spent outdoors, we are all guilty of not always protecting our skin with sunscreen. Fortunately for us, there are plenty of ways using items around the house can help sooth the burning, itching, and peeling that come with overexposure from the sun.
  • Cool Water helps with inflammation of the skin. One of the easiest ways to relieve inflammation immediately, even if you are still outside, is to hop in the water. Whether it is the pool, ocean, or the lake, dipping in and out throughout the day will help keep the sunburn from worsening.
  • Toss a few heaping tablespoons of baking soda into the bathtub with cool water and soak for about 10 minutes to help minimize sun damage. Adding a cup of oatmeal to the bath also helps the skin to retain its natural moisture and soothes irritation. **Don't rub your skin, neither while in nor after getting out of the bathtub. You will want to dab yourself dry with your towel.
  • Aloe Vera gel is the most popular resource for relieving a sunburn. Not only does Aloe Vera provide relief to the burn itself, but it also creates a powerful healing compound on the surface of the skin.
  • Chamomile Tea can also help to soothe your sunburned skin. Brew the tea as you would normally and let it cool.


Waxing for Swimsuit Season:

Pros of Waxing vs. Shaving--
  • hair is removed from root which results in hair-free skin for weeks
  • leaves the skin feeling soft even if you touch against the hair growth side
  • waxing is a natural way of hair removal because it is herbal
  • It will eventually reduce hair growth 

Hair Care for the Pool:

If you are an avid pool swimmer, it is important to know what steps to take to prevent your hair from being dried out. Disinfectants, in general, are used to remove dirt, oil, and bacteria. Our scalps naturally produce oil to protect hair from damage and daily wear. Being exposed to chlorine on a regular basis can cause over drying, increased porosity, and in some cases pretty significant damage to your hair if you do not take the necessary precautions.

Saturate your hair with water--

If you know you are going to be at the pool, wet your hair with fresh water first at home and apply a healthy amount of conditioner to leave in your hair. You can either loosely braid your hair or pull it back in a pony tail. By doing this, you will help the conditioner to 'fill the holes' of damage or split ends instead of the chemicals from the pool.  

Use a swimcap--

If you are an avid swimmer, wearing a pool cap can make a world of difference! 

Rinse, Rinse, Rinse--

After you exit the pool, rinsing your hair will start the process of removing the chlorine from your hair. The sooner you can rid your hair of the chlorine chemicals, the less damage that may be done.

Shampoo! --

Shampooing your hair immediately after chlorine exposure is the best way to remove the bulk of chlorine and stop the damage it may be causing to your hair.

Moisture/ Protein Balance--

Just as important as removing the chlorine, you must replace the

Nail Fun!

One of the best parts of the holidays is having fun, amazing nails to show off to your family and friends for the holiday! Here are a few for inspiration:


What to drink...

What's a summer holiday without a signature drink? You and your family will most likely be spending the day outside in the hot sun, which means a cold, refreshing drink is a must! We have found 2 yummy drink recipes that we just know you will love. Try them out!
This White Wine Sangria is seriously yummy and easy to prepare! Plus, it's healthy since it includes fruit, right?

White Wine Sangria
1 bottle white wine (not too dry)
1 pint strawberries, cut into quarters
1 pint blueberries
1 pint raspberries
1 red apple, sliced
1 bottle sparkling water (Voss, Pellegrino)

In a larger pitcher, combine wine and fruit. Stir gently and let chill at least overnight (a couple days beforehand is recommended). Serve with a splash of sparkling water. Enjoy!
July 4th Layered Drink!

This festive layered drink is not only cool to look at, but it's delicious and simple to make too! It's layers are made up of drinks with different sugar contents:

Red- CranApple Juice (40g)
White- SOBE Pina Colada (25g)
Blue- Low Calorie Blueberry-Pomegranate G2 Thirst Quencher (5g)

The secret to success is plenty of ice. After you add your bottom layer, fill the glass to the top with ice and pour the second, then third layer slowly and directly on top of an ice cube. 

Top it off with a fun waterfall decoration and festive straw and enjoy! 
Fun for All!

Help your kids beat the summer heat with this fun outdoor activity!

All you need is water guns/ water squirters, 6-10 (depending on how many children are playing) empty toilet paper rolls and markers and/or colored tape.  

Decorate the toilet paper rolls as you would like. Once they are decorated, line them up in a danger free zone and let the kids squirt water at them to see who can knock down the most targets! How fun!
