Shelf Life
Autumn 2019
SIMON reflects: “It doesn’t seem possible that nine months have passed since I took over the Archway. It has been a steep learning curve, but certainly the most satisfying of all my work experiences. I have been much encouraged by the enthusiasm that is constantly expressed by the many people who love the unique beauty of the shop. In the era of Amazon, it isn’t easy to make a go of a small independent bookshop, so I’m hugely grateful to all those who recognise that personal service in a place where you can feel and smell the beauty of books is worth paying a bit more for. Thank you for buying local and supporting local jobs and the local economy.”
Christmas is coming
Whether you are an early shopper or a last minute dash sort of person, our Christmas catalogue may help you. It runs to 64 pages and has sections for fiction and a wide range of non-fiction – gift ideas for every age group. You can pick up a copy in the shop or access a digital copy by just tapping on the one above. While we will have many of the books shown in stock, you may want to give us a call to check whether we have what you want. If not, we can usually have them within 24 hours and are happy to post them to you if that helps.
Christmas cards, calendars and advent calendars. Loads to choose from - and many support charities.
We hold around 10,000 books in stock at any time, but we also have access to up to 13 million more. In most cases, we can have them for you to collect from the shop within 24 hours (we will give you a ring to confirm that). But we can also get them sent direct to you from our wholesalers at low postal rates using our ‘Send My Book’ service. A quick phone call is all that’s needed to set either process rolling.
Great reads for autumn
Need some thoughts on what to read through the longer evenings? Here are four quick suggestions that, based on our own assessments and customers comment, we are happy to recommend. See all our Archway ‘hero books’ here.
How green is our garden!
A good few customers have commented on our little browsers garden through the summer months. We made it by clearing a vast pile of rubbish and then adding a raised bed made from recycled pallets and filled it with plants grown at home. Our volunteer gardener has more plans to develop it for next year so watch this space!
Totally committed to Axminster
A few of us traders sat around in the Archway garden back in the summer and pondered how small businesses like ours could survive in the long term. From that idle chatter has spun ‘Totally Locally Axminster’ which launched itself on the town with a week of ‘Fiver Fest’ deals at the beginning of October. With 34 businesses taking part and a real buzz across the community, we are all excited by the long-term potential.
Blowers is coming in to bat in Axminster
Few people have better captured the magic of cricket over the years than Henry Blofeld (better known to most of us as ‘Blowers’). Now retired from doing just that on Test Match Special, he still applies his unique style and phraseology to his books. This new one publishes on 31 October and we have it available on pre-order at discounted price until then. And what’s more, Blowers is coming here on Wednesday 6 November at 12.30. Order now and we will get him to sign yours.
Book clubs flourishing
We are really delighted by the success of our two book clubs. One meets at the shop in the evening, while the other is an afternoon session held at Colyton Garden Shop. Both clubs have about a dozen members and the fascinating thing is that, while they have the same lists to choose from, the two groups have thus far gone very different routes. At least one more club is in prospect so do let us know if you are interested.
Meanwhile ... under the counter
Pebbles has made loads of friends over recent months and has settled beautifully into bookshop life. Much of the time, she sleeps contentedly under the counter, popping out when there is someone prepared to make a fuss of her. Her reward has been to be sketched for this beautiful pastel.
And finally... a quick bit of reassurance for all of you who love the Archway. You might hear on the grapevine that the building we occupy is on the market. Worry not, the bookshop has a long lease on the building and is staying here well into the future.
