APRIL 2021
WORDS FOR REFLECTION
“Then [Jesus] opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, ‘This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead … I am going to send you what my Father has promised.’” —Luke 24:45-46, 49 (NIV)

For reflection: Are there areas of your life in which you are being invited to rise? When was your last visit with your spiritual director?

MY FOURTH DAY STORY
by Priscilla N. Terry
My Walk to Emmaus was in April 1996 at the Omega Retreat Center, Boerne, Texas. This set-apart weekend with Jesus changed my life forever. It prepared me for a life-changing event that, without my relationship with Christ, would have probably resulted in my early death.

Our second child and only son, Timothy, was killed in a car accident in October 2001. The Lord knew this would happen when he led me to the cross at the retreat center that Saturday 5 years earlier on my Emmaus Walk. On that day I gave the Lord all my burdens of guilt and shame, confessed my sins to him, and received forgiveness for all I had done to separate myself from God in the past.

The Upper Room Emmaus Ministries is pleased to announce the addition of two much-anticipated new functions in Ministry Manager. They are mass messaging and the payment portal, as well as some new roles and permissions.

For those not familiar with Ministry Manager, this community management application has been developed by The Upper Room to provide a complete, full-spectrum community management package to our Emmaus Ministries communities. Communities will no longer need to maintain separate data files, rosters, and communications applications to manage their communication strategy and community information. With the rollout of these two new functions, Ministry Manager can now begin to fully realize the goal of bringing communities under one unified model for delivering all Emmaus Ministries and managing the Fourth Day programs to sustain renewed communities and continue to renew Christian disciples and strengthen local churches.

CHRYSALIS VIRTUAL CELEBRATION

To celebrate the new Chrysalis materials becoming available in May, we invite you to mark your calendars for Saturday, May 15, 2021, 12:00–3:00 p.m. Central time for our Chrysalis Virtual Celebration! Although we cannot be together physically due to COVID-19, we will spend this day in celebration, worship, training, small-group time with focused discussions, and more. Everyone interested in Chrysalis is invited to attend, and we encourage Emmaus Board members (in communities that have Chrysalis) to attend.

REGISTER TODAY

Also mark your calendars for an in-person (if possible) Emmaus Ministries Regional Gathering that is being planned for October 8–10, 2021 in Missoula, Montana. There will be a special Chrysalis focus for this time beginning the morning of Friday, October 8. We want to encourage at least one representative from every Chrysalis community in the United States to attend this gathering, plus any other persons from Emmaus/Chrysalis communities who wish to come. It will be so good to gather in person! Stay tuned for more details to come.

A WORD FROM “DOC” HALL ABOUT COVID-19

The pandemic has affected Emmaus Ministries in various ways. Some communities had to completely shut down, and many of them had trouble staying connected to ministry activities that were important to them. Other communities managed to use technology to stay connected through Virtual Gatherings and Reunion Groups. We can only speculate about what the pandemic and the changes it has brought about will mean for the future of these ministries.

FOURTH DAY 5K POSTPONED UNTIL FALL

In the previous eNews, we announced that we would hold a virtual 5K to raise funds for the operations of Emmaus Ministries. We had intended to hold this event immediately after Easter but decided to postpone it until September or October. We’ll share more details in the coming months. As always, we are grateful for your support.

PRAY FOR OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY
We continue to pray for all Emmaus Ministries communities around the world. We pray especially for grace as many continue to face challenges related to the pandemic, as well as for wisdom as others engage in conversations around reopening in-person events. May God bless and keep us all.
