Khandallah Junior Tennis News # 2 - 2014/15

Game on...!

Hi everyone and welcome to the second newsletter of the season. There has been plenty going on since we last wrote at the end of August!

We received a terrific number of registrations for interclub teams and have 19 teams entered from Novice grade to Regional A.  We’ve got most of our players back from last season and, as in prior years, strong sign-ups from younger kids for the novice grades – its great to see the youngies coming through and enjoying competitive tennis.  A number of our older kids have progressed to playing senior tennis this season and we are well represented there with both boys and girls playing right through the senior grades including Premier 1!

Interclub has kicked off really well, some match reports and photos can be found later in this edition.

We are in urgent need of more members of the Committee and more people willing to put their hands up to help with one off projects. Friday Club night particularly is in need of support.  With only 4 Committee members, we are at (probably beyond) the limit of what we can reasonably achieve; extra initiatives like those I mentioned in my first email about Club night cannot be delivered unless we get more help.  Please email or phone me if you are able to help in any way.  Remember, our Club is as good as we collectively make it.

I look forward to seeing you on the courts.

Chris

Key Dates

  • Pre Xmas season: 17th Oct - 14th Dec

  • Post Xmas season: 6th Feb - 29th Mar
We are pleased to announce that the Khandallah Trading Company are generously sponsoring Khandallah Junior Tennis this season!
They have provided a number of meal vouchers and we have allocated three $30 meal vouchers per team with the suggestion that two are used for a player award pre and post-Xmas and the third for a team meal at some point during the season. We will highlight the players awarded these vouchers in the newsletter. It's up to you what the criteria are for the awards, be it results, most improved, most committed, team player etc.

Those managers who do not yet have vouchers can pick these up from Thump Sports - there is a folder behind the counter with an envelope for each manager - please sign to acknowledge receipt on the form attached the folder.

Interclub Match Report

Khandallah Barry – Jemma, Juliane, Jenna, Rachael (L-R)

It was a sunny but slightly breezy Saturday morning on the first day of November for the Regional 2 Girls match against Island Bay. All three courts were available with the parents retiring to the clubhouse deck to spectate.

A series of close matches were played with Island Bay prevailing 4-2.
  • Juliane and Jemma won the opening doubles match in the super tiebreak in a match with a wildly swinging scoreline.
  • Rachael had a close match with an older, wilier girl from her school with many changes of pace and lots of running.
  • Jenna played the first competitive match against her older sister Lauren (now playing for Island Bay) and was narrowly defeated.
  • Juliane then lost to one of her regular training partners in a close singles match.
  • Jemma comprehensively beat the oldest of the Island Bay team.
  • And finally, Rachael and Jenna just missed out on taking their doubles match to a super tiebreak to even up the tie.
The team and parents enjoyed the Island Bay hospitality with coffee, ginger crunch and asparagus rolls (no crusts!) being put on for us.

Season Opening Day - A Great Success

We had a very successful interclub opening day on September 21.  This was a change of approach from prior seasons and worked extremely well. We had all the interclub players there, managers received their team gear and a pre-season briefing, players had their first hit up of the season, Evolve was there to sign up for coaching services and our friends at Thump put on a special sale so everyone could get the right gear. To cap it all off we had hot bacon sandwiches and a nice cup of tea!

Family Club Nights

A reminder for all that Junior club night is run every Friday from 5pm. Bring the kids down to the Club for a fun programme with the Evolve Tennis coaches.  All age groups and abilities welcome.
  • Stroke play and rallying singles and doubles
  • Fun points play in a doubles format
  • Racquet and ball skills
  • Sausage sizzle & relax
Mums and Dads can catch up over a drink and a snack, or head out to the court for a hit from 6:30pm
