TLS Productions, Inc. News & Announcements

This month, we're excited to announce a new addition to the TLS Productions, Inc. team - Cameo Stancliff !!!

Cameo Stancliff recently joined TLS Productions, Inc. and will be concentrating on driving sales outside of the auto industry.  Over the last year she has focused on custom booth sales and management with Plus Studios, Inc., as well as consulting and assisting customer needs on large accounts in the Las Vegas area.

Cameo has over 18 years of experience with the Freeman Companies, serving in roles such as Exhibitor Service Supervisor for Freeman's Service Desk onsite, also running the overall in-house service department.  She then moved in to Operations / Sales and assisted in creating the Freeman Rigging Department where she worked first hand with venue engineers, submitting all necessary drawings.  Cameo was also responsible during that time for managing labor budgets.

From The Desk Of Design Services - December 2015
Contributed by Doyle Martin, VP of Show Services | Director of Design Services

I had an interesting conversation last week with a young man who is a burgeoning lighting and AV tech.  Although I don't do near as much of this type of work as I used to - it is nice to keep my hand in it.

The first bit of advice that I had for him was, "Stick with it and spend lots of time paying close attention to the designs and techniques used on the shows you like to watch."  Although I like to think that I've always had "an eye" for lighting design, the things I do today and the techniques I use are a combination of the things I've learned from many great lighting designers and programmers over the years.  When you see something you like, learn from it.  Figure out how it was done or what made it seem appealing to you.  As lighting and production professionals, we are all building on the shoulders of the giants in our industry who came before us.

My second bit of advice has become my standard battle cry for current and future lighting designers, "Don't be afraid to be subtle."  Many of you reading this newsletter don't remember the world before affordable moving lights.  Get on YouTube and look back at some classic 1970's and 1980's lighting for bands, musicals, and plays.  You'll find that the LD's and programmers of that time didn't rely on "eye candy" as a crutch (at least not as much!) but rather established looks that let the performers carry the song, the moment, or the number.  The lighting simply helped to reinforce the performance and wasn't a show stealer every moment.

We live in a world where not only is every show and event able to afford moving lights, but the world of fixture design has made a swing to lights that have the primary function of providing eye-candy for the audience, the lighting has evolved to - in many circumstances - become the show.  There is a time and a place for this, but there will always be room for the single, saturated backlight and a head to waist followspot frontlight on a vocalist who is pouring their heart out on the stage.  Sometimes it is better to let the talent carry the moment.

Thank you all for taking the time to read the TLSP newsletter.  I know I speak for everyone at TLS Productions, Inc. when I wish you all the happiest of holiday seasons, a very merry Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous new year!
