From The Desk Of Design Services - January 2015
Contributed by Doyle Martin, VP of Show Services | Director of Design Services
Happy New Year, and, please, allow me to welcome you to 2015. At the time of this writing, we are only 16 days into the New Year. Already the TLS Design Services department has been hard at work on projects at the NAIAS in Detroit, CES in Las Vegas, as well as the Washington DC Auto Show. We are also hard at work gearing up for the upcoming Chicago Auto Show.
While our other designers were hard at work for our auto show clients, I had the opportunity to work on a different project. It was my honor to do the lighting design for the ESPN Night of Champions party in conjunction with the first annual college football playoff championships in Dallas, Texas.

Working with the talented production and design staff from MKTG, Inc. under the nurturing hand of TD David Perlman, TLS Productions, Inc. was tasked with creating a fun, party atmosphere, in the mostly empty 42,000 sq.ft. exhibit space at Centennial Hall in Fair Park. This project had a tight budget and a short timetable as pre-production did not get rolling until Christmas week for the party on January 10th, 2015.

The centerpiece of the event would be a wall of 108 - 14" scoops behind the stage, giving the performance space in the room a "stadium" feel. This huge grid would both provide stand-alone visual interest during the DJ provided background music, as well as a memorable, kinetic backdrop for the headline performer, Aloe Blacc. This floor supported grid of scoops was a logistical challenge in a number of ways, but the visual impact created in the room was well worth the effort.

As is the case for any project of this size, there are a number of individuals whose hard work and dedication made the successful execution of this event possible. Our production riggers, Tim Kruse and Adam Wilds, did an excellent job of getting this show safely into a rather challenging space. Lead lighting supervisor, Guy Nelson, did an exemplary job of keeping up with the ever-evolving scope of the project. Moreover, programmer, Eric Wade, did a fantastic job with both the scoop wall and the entertainment lighting rig, resulting in a high-energy concert atmosphere that made the event spectacular.
Our local partner, Gemini Stage LSV, did a fantastic job of providing us with local lighting talent and a gear package that allowed us to give our client the kind of show they desired and deserved. By saving TLSP and MKTG the cost of trucking three semi-trailers of gear across the country, I was able to put that money to work directly on the show, adding to the final result.
At TLS Productions, Inc., we believe that it is our job to give you and your clients the absolute best show for the money you spend. Be it a trade show, sales meeting or special event, both I and my staff are happy to work with you and your client to find the best, most cost effective solutions to make your shows the best they can be.
Thank you for your time, and have a safe and prosperous 2015.
Doyle Martin
VP of Show Services | Director of Design Services
